Pirates win at Genesee
The Prairie Pirates opened the new year by breaking their 6 game losing streak as they traveled to Genesee Saturday, Jan. 7, and won 57-28. Bennie Elven with the ball at Genesee. Also shown is Phil Schwartz.
Maybe the Pirates need to schedule more games against teams nicknamed the Bulldogs as they are 2-0 against Bulldogs (Grangeville and Genesee) and 0-7 against all others.
Lee Forsmann scored the game’s first points on an inbounds feed from Matt Wemhoff but Genesee tied it with 2 free throws.
Prairie then went on a 9-0 run to retake the lead. Forsmann scored inside then Noah Behler drove to the hoop for a lay-up. Riley Shears scored a putback then Shane Hanson made 1 free throw and Forsmann made 2 to make it 11-2.
Genesee scored a pair of baskets to close the first quarter and make it 11-6.
Bennie Elven scored to open the second quarter then Genesee scored 5 straight points to cut the Pirates lead to 13-11.
Shears made a free throw then Genesee made 2 free throws to cut the Pirates lead to just 1 at 14-13 with 2:09 left in the half.
Shears then hit his first 3-pointer of the season and Behler scored a putback to give Prairie a 19-13 lead at the half.
Genesee had the ball out of bounds to open the second half but Behler stole the inbounds pass and drove to the hoop for a lay-up. Forsmann then hit a 3-pointer to put Prairie up 24-13.
Genesee scored 5 straight to get back within 6 but the Pirates responded with an 11-0 run. A steal by Wemhoff led to a basket by Trenton Lorentz. Forsmann then converted a 3-point play. A steal by Elven led to a lay-up by Shears. Shears then stole the ball and fed it to Forsmann for a lay-up. Elven closed out the 11-0 run with a putback for a 35-18 Prairie led.
Genesee broke a scoring drought of over 5 minutes with a basket but Prairie closed out the third quarter with Behler making 2 free throws for a 37-20 lead.
Prairie scored the first 6 points of the fourth quarter to increase their lead to 23. Elven and Phil Schwartz each scored a basket and Behler made 2 more free throws. After a Genesee free throw, Prairie made it a 13-1 scoring run with a basket by Elven and a 3-pointer by Behler. That made it 48-21 with 6:10 to play.
Two free throws by Genesee were answered by a free throw by Forsmann. Genesee then hit a 3 to make it 49-26.
Hanson scored and the Forsmann putback his own missed shot to make it 53-26.
Genesee scored their final points with 3:45 left. Within the next minute Prairie had both Lorentz and Hanson foul out. Both had missed a lot of playing time with foul trouble.
With 2:05 left Schwartz sank a 3-pointer.
With 25 seconds left Genesee lost a player to fouls. He wound up getting a sixth foul as he went straight to the bench before he could be subbed out of the game, which is a technical foul.
Coach Tim Scheffler had senior Ryan Wemhoff shoot the technical free throws and the loudest cheer of the night from the Prairie crowd came when Wemhoff made the first free throw for his first ever varsity point.
Forsmann wound up leading the team in both points and rebounds with 17 and 15 respectively. Behler also scored in double figures with 13 points. Elven and Shears scored 8 points each with Schwartz scoring 5, Hanson 3, Lorentz 2 and Ryan Wemhoff 1.
Prairie had a 41-34 advantage on the boards.
Shears had 6 steals and Matt Wemhoff had 4 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 57 from the field, 37%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%. Genesee was 9 for 43 from the field, 21%, and 8 for 17 at the line, 47%.
Prairie is now 2-7 on the season and 1-3 in league play.
Genesee was short on players so the JV game was just 2 quarters with Prairie pulling out a 16-14 win.
Genesee took and 2-5 lead in the game with Kaden Duclos scoring Prairie’s 2 points. Phil Schwartz then tied it at 5 and Nate Forsmann followed with a free throw and Briggs Rambo added a basket for an 8-5 lead.
Genesee came back to tie it with a basket and then a free throw.
Prairie took the lead for good on a lay-up by Forsmann with 2:30 left in the quarter. Logan Weber followed with a basket on an inbounds play to make it 12-8.
Genesee scored a basket and Weber closed out the first quarter with a free throw to make it 13-10.
Both teams were offensively challenged in the second quarter. Genesee scored to cut the lead to 1 with 7 minutes to play.
Neither team scored until Schwartz made a 3-pointer with 4:30 left to make it 16-12. That was Prairie’s final points of the game. Genesee scored a basket with 2:31 left to pull within 2.
Both teams had their opportunities over the final 2:30 but nobody scored. Genesee had a chance to tie it late when Prairie fouled with 0.8 seconds left for a 1 and 1. The shooter made the first shot but it was waved off as he stepped on the line and since it was a 1 and 1, the game was over.
Schwartz led the JV’s in scoring with 6 points while Forsmann and Weber each scored 3. Duclos and Rambo each scored 2.
Genesee had a 14-17 edge on the boards. Forsmann led Prairie with 4 rebounds.
Rambo had 4 steals while Forsmann had 3. Forsmann and Schwartz each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 6 for 26 from the field, 23%, and 2 for 5 at the line, 40%. Genesee was 6 for 15 from the field, 40%, and 2 for 7 at the line, 28%.
The C team played Orofino at Cottonwood on Friday, January 6, and lost 32-37.
