Lady Pirates win twice
The Prairie Lady Pirates won a pair of games this past week. On Thursday, Jan. 5, they traveled to Kendrick and came back from an 11-point halftime deficit to win 51-50. On Friday, Jan. 6, they hosted Genesee in a league game and won 74-36.
They were scheduled to play Grangeville on Monday, Jan. 9, but that game was cancelled by Grangeville.
Prior to the Genesee game announcer Gus Hoene honored Jerry Wren, who passed away recently and has 3 granddaughters on the team. The players also wore special warm shirts honoring Wren.
At Kendrick
Prairie gained a season split with Kendrick by pulling out a win.
Prairie jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the game as Kristin Wemhoff opened the scoring with a basket a couple minutes in. Lexi Schumacher added a free throw and Wemhoff scored again to make it 5-0.
Kendrick finally got on the board with a free throw and then added a basket to pull within 2. Riley Enneking scored a lay-up to make it 7-3 but Kendrick closed out the first quarter scoring with a 3-point to make it 7-6 after 1 period.
Lexi Schumacher opened the second quarter scoring with a basket but Kendrick answered with a basket and then made a 3-pointer to take their first lead of the game.
Tara Schlader tied it on a feed from Wemhoff but just after that Wemhoff picked up her third foul and went to the bench for the rest of the half.
Kendrick took advantage of Wemhoff’s absence to force numerous turnovers from the Pirates and went on a 2-15 run. They scored 4 straight then Lexi Schumacher scored a lay-up. Kendrick then scored 11 straight for a 13-26 lead before Sage Elven broke the run with a lay-up on an inbound feed from Enneking just before the half. That gave Kendrick a 15-26 halftime lead.
Kendrick led by as many as 14 early in the second half after a 3-pointer made it 17-31. Prairie then went on a 9-0 run to get back into the game. Lexi Schumacher started the run with a 3-pointer. Wemhoff drove in for a score and then Kylie Schumacher hit back to back baskets to make it 26-31.
A basket each by Wemhoff and Lexi Schumacher cut the margin to 4 at 30-34.
Kendrick quickly pushed it back to 8 with a pair of baskets. Schlader scored but Kendrick answered. Prairie was able to finish the quarter with a basket as a steal by Wemhoff led to a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher at the buzzer. That made it 34-40 after 3 quarters.

A perimeter shot by Kendrick was answered by a basket by Schlader and a free throw by Wemhoff that cut the lead to 1 at 41-42.
After a Kendrick basket, Lexi Schumacher hit a 3 that tied the game at 44 with 5:12 left.
Kendrick answered with a 3 but Lexi Schumacher hit another 3 to again tie it at 47-47.
Wemhoff then scored on a drive to the hoop to give Prairie their first lead since early in the second quarter.
Kendrick answered with a banked in 3-pointer to go back on top by 1.
With about a minute left Wemhoff went in for a lay-up but missed. The ball came off to Kylie Schumacher who managed to push the ball over to Lexi Schumacher for a basket that made it 51-50.
The final minute of action saw Schlader blocking a couple of Kendrick shots and the Pirates unable to extend their lead due to missed shots and turnovers.
Lexi Schumacher wound up with 20 points to lead the scoring while Wemhoff added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Schlader scored 6 points with 12 rebounds. Kylie Schumacher had 4 points and 10 rebounds. Enneking and Elven each scored 2 points.
Prairie had a 53-34 advantage on the boards.
Lexi Schumacher had 5 steals while Schlader had 4. Wemhoff had 3 steals and 4 assists.
Prairie was 23 for 64 from the field, 36%, and 2 for 5 at the line, 40%. Kendrick was 19 for 62 from the field, 31%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%.
In the JV game Prairie lost 18-30.

Vs. Genesee
The game against Genesee was close through most of the first quarter then Prairie broke it open in the second with a 16-0 run. Tara Schlader and a Genesee player battle for the ball. Of course a jump ball was called.
Kristin Wemhoff started the scoring with a 3-pointer with Genesee answering with a basket. Kylie Schumacher sank a 10-footer then Hailey Hanson made a 3-pointer and Lexi Schumacher scored after a steal for a 10-2 lead.
Genesee scored 4 straight points to pull within 4 but a putback each by Kylie Schumacher and Enneking made it 14-6. Genesee answered with a 3-pointer to make it 14-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Alli Geis scored to open the second quarter and Genesee answered with a free throw.
Wemhoff then scored to kick off Prairie’s 16-0 run that put them in control of the game. Enneking followed with a basket. Wemhoff made a 3-pointer and then a basket. Lexi Schumacher made a 3 and Wemhoff and Kylie Schumacher each added a basket to give Prairie a 32-10 lead.
Genesee finally broke through with a pair of 3 pointers but Lexi Schumacher answered with a 3 of her own. Another Genesee 3 was answered with a 3 by Wemhoff to make it 38-19. Genesee scored in the final seconds to make it 38-21 at the half.
Prairie opened the second half with a 9-0 run. Kylie Schumacher scored on a putback and then Lexi Schumacher made a 3. Wemhoff scored a free throw then Lexi Schumacher sank another 3-pointer to make it 47-21.
Genesee had a 2-5 run with Schlader scoring Prairie’s 2 points, then Prairie score 9 straight points. Schlader scored a putback and then on a hook shot. Lexi Schumacher then scored a lay-up following a steal by Geis, then hit her fifth 3-pointer of the game to make it 58-26.
After 4 points by Genesee, Wemhoff scored a lay-up and Enneking scored to close out the quarter for a 62-30 lead. That made it a running clock for the entire fourth quarter.
Enneking opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and followed with a 2-point basket for a 67-30 lead. Genesee scored 4 straight then Wemhoff and Elven each scored a basket.
After 2 Genesee free throws Wemhoff scored a free throw when Genesee was assessed a technical for inserting a JV swing player whose name and number hadn’t been put in the varsity book. Schlader then scored the game’s final 2 points.
Wemhoff wound up with 21 points to lead the scoring with Lexi Schumacher adding 19 and Enneking 11. Schlader and Kylie Schumacher each scored 8 while Hanson scored 3 and Geis and Elven added 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 53-33. Schlader had 14 rebounds to lead the Pirates while Kylie Schumacher added 10 rebounds.
Wemhoff and Schlader each had 6 steals while Wemhoff had 10 assists.
Prairie was 31 for 73 from the field, 42%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%. Genesee was 12 for 40 from the field, 30%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%.
Prairie is now 9-3 on the season and 5-1 in league play.
In the JV game Sydney Shears and Sage Elven combined for 34 points to lead Prairie to a 59-26 win over Genesee.
Shears scored the opening basket. After Genesee tied it, Prairie scored the next 22 straight points. They held Genesee scoreless from the 7:02 mark of the first quarter until the 6:49 mark of the second. Prairie led 21-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Shears scored 8 points in the 22-0 run with Elven scoring 7. Aubree Rehder scored 4 and Ellie Nuxoll scored the other 3.
Genesee was able to outscore Prairie 6-13 the rest of the half to make it 30-15 at the break. Nuxoll scored 2 free throws while Shears and Kaylie Lockett each scored 2.
Elven came back into the game in the third quarter after sitting out the second and Prairie outscored Genesee 20-8 in the period to take a 50-23 lead into the fourth quarter.
Elven scored 8 in the quarter and Shears added 7 while Elizabeth Severns made a 3-pointer and Nuxoll added 2 points.
In the fourth Nuxoll scored a putback and Rehder made a free throw to make it 53-23 and invoke the running clock mercy rule. Severns added a free throw and Nuxoll a basket as Prairie opened the quarter with an 8-0 run to make it 58-23.
After a basket and a free throw by Genesee, Avery Riener scored the game’s final point at the free throw line.
Shears wound up with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Also having double-doubles were Elven with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Nuxoll with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Rehder scored 7 points while Severns scored 4, Lockett 2 and Riener 1.
With 3 double figure rebounders you would expect the Pirates to have dominated the boards and they did, 47-26.
Elven had 6 steals and 5 assists while Nuxoll had 5 steals. Lockett had 3 steals and 3 assists.
Prairie was 23 for 56 from the field, 41%, and 12 for 25 at the line, 48%. Genesee was 8 for 38 from the field, 21%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%.
