Pirates win two of three
The Prairie Pirates won 2 of 3 games this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, they beat C.V. 59-32 at Cottonwood. On Saturday, Jan. 12, they made it a 3-game winning streak with a 57-53 win in overtime over Logos at Moscow. Finally on Monday, Jan. 16, they traveled to Potlatch to make up a game postponed by illness and lost 36-55.
Vs. C.V.
Lee Forsmann had a huge game against the Rams at Cottonwood as he wound up outscoring the Rams team 33-32. Lee Forsmann shoots for 2 of his 33 points against C.V. last Tuesday, Jan. 10.
He got Prairie stated with a basket and 2 free throws for a 4-0 lead. C.V. came back to tie it at 4-4 but Forsmann scored 2 more free throws to put Prairie back on top and added a third free throw. Bennie Elven then got into the scoring column on a spin move in the lane to make it 9-4.
After a C.V. baskets, Riley Shears scored on a putback and added a later free throw to make it 12-6. C.V. scored to make it 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.
C.V. cut the deficit to 2 in the second quarter then Forsmann added 2 more free throws and Phil Schwartz scored a basket to make it 16-10.
After a Rams basket, Shears and Forsmann each scored to put Prairie up 8 at 20-12. C.V. cut the lead to 4 before Prairie closed out the half with 6 straight points. Forsmann and Elven each scored on putbacks then Forsmann stole the ball and scored to make it 26-16 at the half.
At that point Forsmann had scored 15 and C.V. had 16.
C.V. opened the second half with a basket then Forsmann scored twice to put Prairie up by 12 at 30-18.
C.V. cut the lead to 8 with a pair of baskets buy Forsmann then hit a 3 and followed a minute later with 2 free throws to give Prairie a 13 point lead at 35-22.
C.V. put a mini-run together scoring 5 straight points but Prairie answered with 5 straight of their own. Forsmann sank 2 more free throws and Shears hit a 3-pointer to make it 40-27.
C.V. scored to end the quarter with Prairie ahead 40-29.
C.V. scored to open the fourth quarter and get their deficit down to 10  but Prairie then scored 9 straight points.
A basket each by Shears and Trenton Lorentz were followed by a putback by Forsmann, a lay-up by Lorentz and a free throw by Shane Hanson as Prairie took a 49-30 lead. C.V. then scored what turned out to be their final points of the game, a pair of free throws with 3:05 left to play.
Prairie then finished the game with a 10-0 run. Forsmann hit a 3-pointer. Matt Wemhoff then stole ensuing inbounds pass and scored. Elven hit a turn-around jumper then Forsmann scored to put him ahead of C.V. 33-32. Shears scored the game’s final point at the free throw line.
Forsmann was 10 for 17 from the field and 11 for 14 at the line with a pair of 3-pointers for his game high 33 points. He also led the team in rebounds with 12 and had 7 steals. Shears was also in double figures with 11 points and added 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Lorentz, Elven and Schwartz each scored 4 points while Wemhoff scored 2 and Hanson 1.
Prairie had a 43-36 edge on the boards. Wemhoff almost hit double figures with 9 rebounds and had 5 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 65 from the field, 32%, and 14 for 25 at the line, 42%. C.V. was 14 for 42 from the field, 33%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%.
Prairie also won the JV game against the Lewiston C team 45-35.
Prairie led just 2 times in the first quarter, 4-2 after a basket by Logan Weber and 10-8 after a steal and ensuing basket by Levi Gehring.
Lewiston finished the first quarter with a 0-8 run to take a 10-16 lead.
Lewiston led 12-21 in the second quarter when Prairie turned the game around. Prairie scored the next 16 straight points including the final 12 of the first half.
Nate Forsmann got the run started with a lay-up. Weber followed with a lay-up. Kaden Duclos scored a putback. Briggs Rambo scored on a drive to the hoop. Benny Secrest scored a putback and Rambo finished the first half with a steal and drive to the hoop to make it 29-21 at the break.
Gehring opened the second half with a basket and Forsmann followed with a lay-up off a feed from Phil Schwartz.
Lewiston then scored their only point of the third quarter as Prairie forced 9 turnovers and allowed just 2 shot attempts in the quarter.
Prairie then finished the quarter with 5 straight points. Weber scored a basket, Rambo a free throw and Schwartz a basket to give Prairie a 33-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Lewiston was able to get within 8 points a couple times in the fourth quarter but each time Prairie responded.
Rambo had a 3-pointer in the fourth while Duclos, Max Rehder and Jackson Enneking each had a basket. Collin Ray made 2 free throws and Secrest added a free throw as Lewiston was only able to gain a point on the Pirates in the final period.
Rambo wound up with 8 points to lead the JVs. Gehring, Schwartz, Forsmann and Weber each scored 6. Duclos scored 4, Secrest scored 3 and Enneking, Rehder and Ray each scored 2.
Prairie had a 43-30 edge on the boards. Forsmann led the Pirates with 9 rebounds.
Gehring and Rambo each had 3 steals and Gehring, Forsmann and Schwartz each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 20 for 59 from the field, 34%, and 4 for 12 at the line 33%. Lewiston was 15 for 40 from the field, 38%, and 4 for 9 at the line, 44%.

At Logos
Prairie trailed for all but the final 5 seconds of the second half but wound up winning in overtime at Logos.
Prairie had the lead just once in a low-scoring opening quarter when Lorentz hit a 3-pointer at the 4:36 mark that gave Prairie a 5-4 lead. Lorentz had also scored the first 2 points of the game for the Pirates.
Riley Shears goes for a lay-up at Logos.Logos took the lead back about 2 minutes later and the score stood at 5-6 at the end of the period.
Shears converted a 3-point play to put Prairie back on top 30 seconds into the second quarter. Then after a Logos turnover, Behler through a full-court inbounds pass to Shears who went in for a lay-up to make it 10-6.
Logos answered with the first of what would be five 3-pointers from Jack Driskill. Forsmann then made 2 free throws to put Prairie up 12-9. Logos tied it with a 3 but Forsmann answered with a 3-point play when he was fouled on a putback. Another 3 by Driskill tied it at 15.
Forsmann put Prairie back on top with a free throw but C.V. answered with a basket to retake the lead. Forsmann put Prairie back on top with a putback and added 2 free throws for a 20-17 lead. Sentz then hit another 3 to tie it and Logos took the lead on a 2-point basket with 25 seconds left in the half.
Noah Behler cut the lead to 1 with a free throw but Logos was fouled at the buzzer and made both free throws for a 21-24 halftime lead.
Behler scored to open the second half and cut the lead to one but Prairie then saw Lorentz quickly pick up 2 fouls to go to the bench with 4 and Matt Wemhoff picked up his third.
Logos would add three more 3-pointers in the quarter and led by as many as 6 points 3 different time. The first time Forsmann scored a 3-point play to cut the lead to 3 at 26-29. After a 3-pointer pushed the lead back to 6, Behler scored on an inbounds feed from shears and Forsmann sank a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 1 at 31-32.
Logos answered with their own 0-5 run to again lead by 6. Hanson made a free throw and Shears a basket to close out the quarter with Prairie down 34-37.
In the fourth quarter Prairie again fell behind by 6 at 40-46 with 2:12 to play when Driskill, who had been guarded by Forsmann since his shooting flurry in the second quarter, somehow got loose for his fifth 3-pointer.
Shears hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead in half with 31 seconds left. Logos made the first free throw of a 1 and 1 but missed the second. Forsmann scored and was fouled, converting a 3-point play with 14.2 seconds left to cut the lead to 46-47. Prairie quickly fouled on the inbounds but Seamus Wilson of the Knights made both free throws. Prairie called timeout and set up the play where Lorentz got the ball to Forsmann on the wing for the game-tying 3-pointer with 5 seconds to play. Logos’ desperation shot didn’t come close and the game went to overtime.
Wilson scored 2 free throws for the first points in overtime but Forsmann answered with a basket.
Wilson scored again with 2:33 left for the final Logos lead of the night. 33 seconds later Forsmann sank a 3-pointer to put Prairie up for good.
Logos went after Hanson on the foul with 54 seconds left hoping he would continue the struggles at the line that saw him make just 1 of 9 so far in the game and 0 of 5 in the fourth quarter. However Hanson came up clutch and made both free throws for a 56-53 lead.
Wemhoff then stole the ball but Prairie gave it back on a turnover with 25 seconds left. Wilson missed a 3-point shot with 9 seconds left and Behler got the rebound and was fouled. He made the second of the 2 free throws to give Prairie a 4-point lead with 7.4 seconds left and that was the ballgame.
Forsmann had his second straight 30+ point outing with 31 points and added 11 rebounds. He also made the final 6 shots he attempted in the game, scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.Shears had 12 points and 8 rebounds. Behler scored 6. Lorentz scored 5 and Hanson scored 3.
Prairie had a 32-26 edge on the boards.
Lorentz had 3 steals and Hanson had 2 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 37 from the field, 51%, and 14 for 29 at the line, 48%. Logos was 17 for 47 from the field, 36%, and 11 for 16 at the line, 69%.
Prairie lost the JV game 34-43.
Forsmann scored Prairie’s first 5 points as they took a 5-4 lead. Schwartz scored to make it 7-4 and then after a Logos basket, made 2 free throws for a 9-6 lead. Logos tied it with a 3-pointer to make it 9-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Knights then took the lead for good with the first 4 points of the second quarter as they outscored Prairie 1-9 to open the period.
Prairie was outscored 9-14 in the period with Schwartz scoring 4, Weber 3 and Forsmann 2 in the quarter for the Pirates.
Schwartz hit a 3 to start the second half and pull the Pirates within 2 but Logos answered with 5 straight points.
Schwartz and Forsmann each scored a basket to cut the deficit to 3 at 25-28 but Logos closed out the quarter with 5 straight to take a 25-33 lead into the fourth.
Prairie never got closer than 5 points in the fourth at 28-33 and again at 30-35.
Forsmann wound up with 16 points to lead the JVs in scoring with Schwartz scoring 13, Weber 4 and Levi McElroy 1.
The JVs had a 35-30 rebounding edge led by Weber with 11.
Rambo, Schwartz and Forsmann each had 3 steals and Weber had 3 assists.
Prairie was 12 for 45 from the field, 27%, and 9 for 16 at the line, 56%. Logos was 18 for 47 from the field, 38%, and 3 for 7 at the line, 43%.
Prairie also lost the C game 28-30.
Logos scored the first 4 points of the game but Collin Ray made a pair of 3-pointers to give Prairie a 6-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Prairie led 10-8 after a basket each by Cole Duclos and Ray but Logos then scored 8 straight to take a 10-16 halftime lead.
Max Rehder and Ray each sank a 3-pointer in the third quarter and Chase VonBargen and Benny Secrest each had a 2-pointer as Prairie opened the second half with a 10-0 run to take a 20-16 lead. Logos was held scoreless until scoring with 10 seconds left to make it 20-18 heading into the fourth quarter.
Logos tied it then Ryan Wemhoff hit one of his high-arching 3-pointers to put Prairie back on top. Logos then scored the next 8 straight points until Rehder made all 3 free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt. Prairie then tied it at 28 with 2:06 to play on a lay-up by Levi McElroy.
Logos took the lead back on single free throws with 1:57 and 23 seconds left and Prairie couldn’t get a shot to fall in the final 2 minutes of play. Wemhoff missed the final attempt at the buzzer that could have won it if it had gone.
Ray wound up as the leading scorer and rebounder with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Rehder scored 6 with Wemhoff scoring 3 and Secrest, McElroy, VonBargen and Cole Duclos each scoring 2.

At Potlatch
At Potlatch the Loggers ended Prairie’s 3-game winning streak.
Prairie was able to stay close until about 2 minutes into the second quarter. Potlatch jumped out to a 0-4 lead before Forsmann scored on a putback.
Potlatch led 2-9 before Forsmann converted a 3-point play and Hanson scored on a feed from Shears to cut the margin to 2. Potlatch then answered with a 4 but Elven scored to make it 9-12 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Forsmann was fouled and made both free throws. Shears then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored to give Prairie a 13-12 lead. Unfortunately that was their only lead of the game.
That seemed to wake up the Loggers as they wen on a 0-14 scoring run. Prairie went scoreless for over 7 minutes before Forsmann scored on a putback with 22 seconds left in the half. Hanson added a lay-up 20 seconds later to make it 17-26 at the half.
Potlatch opened the second half with a 2-14 run where a pair of Forsmann free throws was all the Pirates could put on the board. Forsmann added another free throw and Matt Wemhoff hit a 3-pointer to make it 23-42 after 3 quarters.
The two teams each scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and both teams emptied their benches with 1 minute to play and the Loggers up by 20. The final minute for the Pirates was highlighted by Ryan Wemhoff’s first varsity 3-pointer that he banked in with 3 seconds to play.
Forsmann was again the Pirates’ leading scorer with 16 points. Hanson and Elven each scored 4. Matt and Ryan Wemhoff each scored 3 points and Lorentz, Shears and Levi Gehring each scored 2.
Potlatch had a 20-27 edge on the boards. Forsmann led the Pirates with 7 rebounds.
Shears had 2 steals and Behler, Shears and Forsmann each had 2 assists.
The Pirates were 13 for 35 from the field, 37%, and 8 for 11 at the line, 73%. Potlatch was 20 for 44 from the field, 45%, and 11 for 14 at the line, 79%.
The Pirates are now 4-8 on the season and 3-4 in league play.
The JV team lost 25-40.
Prairie never led in the game. Potlatch scored first and Prairie tied it on a lay-up by Forsmann. Potlatch took the lead on 2 free throws but Prairie tied it again on a lay-up by Weber.
Potlatch then took control by scoring the final 7 points of the first quarter for a 4-11 lead and then scored the first 2 of the second quarter.
Most of that timespan Forsmann was sitting after picking up his second foul. He came back in with the score at 5-15 after Rambo had scored a free throw for the Pirates.
Potlatch scored to make it 5-17 then Forsmann scored the next 6 points in the game to cut the deficit to 11-17. Potlatch closed out the first half with a 3-pointer for an 11-20 halftime lead.
Potlatch scored to open the second half then Schwartz scored  and Gehring followed with a putback to make it 15-22. Prairie scored just free throws for the rest of the quarter hitting 4 of 6 attempts. Weber and Forsmann were each 1 for 2 and Gehring made both of his. However Potlatch led 19-30 after 3 quarters.
Prairie was unable to make any headway in the fourth with 25-34 after a 3 by Rambo being as close as they would get. Potlatch then scored the final 6 points of the game.
Forsmann wound up with 10 points to lead the scoring. Rambo scored 6, Gehring 5, Weber 3 and Schwartz 2.
Potlatch had a 24-30 edge on the boards. Gehring led the Pirates with 8 rebounds with Forsmann adding 7.
Gehring had 3 steals and Forsmann had 2 assists.
Prairie was 9 for 37 from the field, 24%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. Potlatch was 17 for 40 from the field, 43%, and 5 for 7 at the line, 71%.
