Pirates lose twice
The Prairie Pirates lost a pair of league games this past week. On Thursday, Jan. 19, they lost at Lapwai 35-96. On Saturday, Jan. 21, they lost at Troy 35-52.
At Lapwai
In the game at #1 ranked and unbeaten Lapwai, the Pirates were blown out from the start. They trailed 9-20 after one quarter and 15-44 by halftime. They trailed 22-72 after 3 quarters.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Despite that it was the highest scoring quarter of the game.
The win was Lapwai’s 50th straight.
Lee Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 13 points. Trenton Lorentz scored 6, Riley Shears 5, Bennie Elven 4, Phil Schwartz 3 and Matt Wemhoff and Noah Behler 2 each.
Lapwai also won the JV game 56-68. Prairie led most of the first 3 quarters but Lapwai took control in the fourth quarter.
The C team also played but we have no information on that game.

At Troy
In the game at Troy the Pirates fell behind 2-10 then got a basket each from Shears and Lorentz to close within 6-10 by the end of the first quarter. Lee Forsmann scores a lay-up at Troy. Also shown is Trenton Lorentz.
Troy scored the first 4 points of the second quarter before Forsmann scored on a drive to the hoop. After a Troy free throw Elven scored to make it 10-15. Troy then scored 6 straight points to push the lead to 11.
Lorentz hit a nice turn-around jump shot and Shane Hanson made a pair of free throws that made it 14-21 at the half.
Lorentz scored to open the second half and get Prairie back within 5 but Troy then went on a 1-15 run to open up the game and take control. A free throw by Forsmann was Prairie’s only point in a span of almost 6 minutes.
Prairie broke the run when Elven scored a basket and Shears followed by converting a 3-point play after making a steal. Troy then scored again to take a 22-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
Troy outscored the Pirates by just 1 in the fourth quarter, 13-14, as they were able to keep the lead between 16 and 21 points. Forsmann scored 5 in the quarter while Schwartz connected on a 3-pointer. Hanson made a pair of free throws to make him 4 for 4 at the line in the game. Shears added a basket and Behler made a free throw.
Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 10 points while Shears scored 7, Lorentz 6, Hanson and Elven 4 each, Schwartz 3 and Behler 1.
Troy had a 31-38 edge on the boards. Forsmann had 7 to lead the Pirates while Behler and Lorentz each had 6.
Forsmann had 3 steals and 3 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 34 from the field, 38%, and 8 for 13 at the line, 62%. Troy was 20 for 61 from the field, 33%, and 10 for 15 at the line, 67%.
Prairie is now 4-10 on the season and 3-6 in league play.
In the JV game it was tied at 19-19 at the end of the first quarter. Prairie outscored Troy 49-21 the rest of the game for a 68-40 win.
The game was back and forth early on with Nate Forsmann tying the game at 11-11 with a 3-point play. Troy then went on a 0-8 run but Prairie responded with their own 8-0 run to end the quarter tied at 19-19. Logan Weber and Forsmann each scored 4 points in that quarter ending 8-0 run.
Troy scored to open the second quarter but Forsmann tied it with a putback. Weber then put Prairie ahead with a free throw and Levi Gehring added a free throw for a 23-21 lead. Troy tied it with a basket but Forsmann scored a pair of baskets to put Prairie up 4.
A 3-point play by Troy was answered with a 6-0 run by the Pirates. Phil Schwartz, Gehring and Forsmann each scored a basket to make it 33-26.
A Troy basket was then answered by a 3 from Gehring. After another Troy basket, Forsmann closed out the half with a basket and 2 free throws for a 40-30 halftime lead.
Forsmann started the second half with a basket and then 2 more free throws to make it 44-30.
After 2 Troy free throws, Forsmann scored a lay-up and Schwartz added a basket to make it 48-32. Troy then scored 5 of the next 7 points to make it 50-37 but Prairie then scored 11 straight to end the third quarter and take a 61-37 lead into the fourth. Briggs Rambo started it with a drive to the hoop. Jackson Enneking scored a putback. Forsmann then hit a 3-pointer and followed with a basket and a putback.
Troy scored to open the fourth quarter then Prairie scored 7 straight points. Rambo made 2 free throws then Weber converted a 3-point play. Forsmann added a basket to make it 68-38 and start the running clock for the final 3:16.
Troy scored the only points in the final 3 minutes on a basket with 42 seconds left.
Forsmann had a huge game as he hit 15 of 25 shots in the game and 3 of 6 free throws for 34 points. He also had 10 rebounds 4 steals and 2 assists. Weber also had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Gehring had 5 points and 10 rebounds while Schwartz and Rambo each scored 4 points and Enneking scored 2.
Prairie had a 38-37 edge on the boards.
Gehring and Schwartz each had 3 steals and Weber and Gehring each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 57 from the field, 46%, and 14 for 24 at the line, 58%. Troy was 17 for 53 from the field, 32%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%.
In contrast to the high scoring JV game, the C game was all about defense and missed shots as Prairie held on to win 12-8. Yes, 12-8 was the final score of a 4-quarter game.
Troy  took a 0-3 lead in the game but a free throw by Jackson Enneking and a basket by Benny Secrest tied the score at 3-3 which is were it stood at the end of the first quarter.
Secrest scored on an inbounds feed from Levi McElroy to give Prairie their first lead at the 4:30 mark of the second quarter. Troy tied it on a free throw with 1:12 left and another free throw with 55 seconds left to make it 5-5 at the half.
McElroy made a free throw at the 5:11 mark of the third quarter to put Prairie ahead for good. Collin Ray drove the baseline for a lay-up at the 1:21 mark and McElroy drove for a lay-up with 45 seconds left to make it 10-5 as Troy was held scoreless in the quarter. It wasn’t for lack of trying as Troy missed 13 shots from the field and 4 free throws in the quarter.
Ryan Wemhoff swished a free throw to open the fourth quarter scoring. Troy then scored their first point of the second half with 3:47 to play at the free throw line to make it 11-6. Secrest made a free throw with 39 seconds left to make it 12-6 and Troy answered with a basket with 29 seconds left, their only basket of the second half.
Secrest wound up with 5 points to lead the scoring. McElroy scored 3, Ray 2 and Enneking and Wemhoff 1 each.
Troy had a 37-40 edge on the boards. McElroy, Chris Schumacher and Max Rehder each had 7 rebounds while Secrest had 6.
Schumacher had 4 steals while Enneking had 3. Ray and McElroy each had an assist.
Prairie was 4 for 30 from the field, 13%, and 4 for 16 at the line, 25%. Troy was 2 for 37 from the field, 5%, and 4 for 18 at the line, 22%.
