Lady Pirates win two of three
The Prairie Lady Pirates won 2 of their 3 games this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, they got blitzed by Lapwai 29-62 at Cottonwood. On Thursday, Jan. 19, in a game rescheduled from December, they won at Kamiah 53-38. Finally on Saturday, Jan. 21, they traveled to Troy and won 56-21.
Vs. Lapwai
Lapwai started the game against Prairie in a full-court press, something they hadn’t done in the two previous games against the Pirates. They forced 11 first quarter turnovers and raced out to leads of 0-9, 2-14 and 4-24.Kristin Wemhoff goes for a lay-up against Lapwai.
Prairie got 2 free throws from Kristin Wemhoff at the 5:11 mark for their first points. Alli Geis scored a basket at the 3:33 mark and Tara Schlader scored a free throw with 1.8 seconds left in the quarter as Prairie trailed 5-24 after 1 period.
Lapwai then scored the first 6 points of the second quarter for a 5-30 lead.
Prairie finally got something going as Hailey Hanson sank a 3-pointer that kicked off a 10-0 run for Prairie. Wemhoff scored the next 7 points on a basket, free throw and 2 more baskets that cut the deficit to 15-30.
Wemhoff added 2 more free throws and a basket the rest of the quarter but Prairie trailed 19-35 at the half.
The third quarter was as bad as the first as Wemhoff scored 30 seconds into the period but that turned out to be Prairie’s only points of the quarter as Lapwai went on a 0-14 run to take at 21-49 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the final period Lapwai made 5 of 7 free throws to help them hold off any Prairie rally.
Wemhoff wound up with 16 points before fouling out with 2:03 to play. Nobody else scored more than 4 for the Pirates. The Wildcats collapsed on Schlader anytime she got the ball in the paint and limited her to 4 points. Hanson scored 3 and Geis, Kylie Schumacher and Riley Enneking scored 2 each. Lapwai made sure Lexi Schumacher never got an open look and limited her to just 8 shot attempts, all contested, and 0 points.
Lapwai also had a 32-46 edge on the boards. Schlader had 17 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Schlader had 6 steals and 2 assists.
Prairie was 10 for 42 from the field, 24%, and 8 for 18 at the line, 44%. Lapwai was 23 for 63 from the field, 37%, and 10 for 18 at the line, 55%. Lapwai made 8 of their first 10 shots in the game to get off to their fast start.
Prairie won the JV game 46-28, breaking open a close game in the second quarter.
Prairie never led in the first quarter although they tied the score at 2, 4 and 6. Sage Elven scored all 6 Prairie first quarter points as it was 6-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie then dominated the second quarter opening with an 8-0 run. Elven scored on an inbounds feed from Kaylie Lockett to give Prairie their first lead. Ellie Nuxoll and Sydney Shears each followed with a basket. Aubree Rehder hit 2 of 4 free throws to make it 14-6.
With 3:48 left in the quarter Lapwai scored a basket that turned out to be their only points of the quarter. Prairie then closed out the half with 15 straight points for a 29-8 halftime lead.
Shears started the run with a lay-up. Nuxoll followed with a putback and then scored following a steal. Elven scored a free throw then Rehder scored on a putback. Two steals by Elven led to a basket by her and another basket by Shears. Shears then hit a buzzer beating bank shot to close out the half.
Rehder hit a pair of 3-pointers to open the second half and make it a 21-0 run for a 35-8 lead. Prairie then went ice-cold missing their next 10 shots as Lapwai scored the final 9 points of the quarter to cut the Pirate lead to 35-17 by the end of the period.
Lapwai scored the first 2 points of the fourth quarter before Prairie put together a 7-0 run. Elizabeth Severns scored then Sarah Lustig converted a 3-point play. Severns scored again to make it 42-19.
Lapwai outscored Prairie the rest of the way 4-9 with Lockett making 2 free throws and Severns a basket for Prairie’s points.
Elven wound up with a double-double of 11 points and 11 assists despite playing just the first half. Rehder scored 10 points. Shears scored 8. Nuxoll and Severns had 6 points each. Lustig scored 3 and Lockett scored 2.
Prairie had a 65-40 advantage on the boards. Shears and Nuxoll each had 16 rebounds to lead the team. Severns added 8 rebounds.
Elven, Shears and Nuxoll each had 7 steals and Lockett had 6 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 81 from the field, 22%, and 8 for 28 at the line, 29%. Lapwai was 10 for 41 from the field, 24%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%.

At Kamiah
In the game at Kamiah which was rescheduled from Dec. 15 due to illness at Prairie High School, the Pirates and Kubs played pretty much even except for the final 6 minutes of the first half.
Prairie took a 3-0 lead on a basket by Lexi Schumacher and a free throw by Schlader. Kamiah answered with 8 straight points. Prairie then came right back with 5 straight points to tie the game at the end of the first quarter, 8-8. Wemhoff had a free throw. Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws and a steal by Enneking led to the tying backet by Wemhoff.
Kamiah opened the second quarter with a basket but Kylie Schumacher tied it with a free throw. Kamiah made two free throws to take the lead at 10-12 but that was to be their final lead of the game.
Lexi Schumacher made back-to-back 3’s that kicked off a 22-0 run to end the first half. She then made 2 free throws as she scored 8 straight points. Sage Elven scored on a turn-around shot. Wemhoff scored a lay-up. Kylie Schumacher scored a putback. Wemhoff scored another layup. Elven scored down low. Geis and Hanson then each scored a putback to give Prairie a 32-12 halftime lead.
Wemhoff stole the ball and scored to open the second half to make it a 24-0 scoring run. Kamiah finally broke back into the scoring column. Kamiah outscored Prairie the rest of the third quarter as they hit a couple of 3-pointers but were still down 43-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Wemhoff scored 6 in the quarter for Prairie while Schlader scored 3 and Elven 2.
Kamiah outscored Prairie 5-12 to start the fourth quarter and got their deficit down to 12 points at 48-36. Wemhoff scored 2 and Schlader 3 for the Pirates in that stretch. Prairie then outscored Kamiah 5-2 to finish out the game. Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws and a basket while Wemhoff added a free throw.
Wemhoff wound up with 14 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Lexi Schumacher and Kylie Schumacher each scored 10. Elven scored 8, Schlader 7 and Hanson and Geis 2 each.
Prairie had a 52-41 advantage on the boards led by Kylie Schumacher with 13 rebounds. Elven had 9 while Schlader and Wemhoff each had 7.
Wemhoff had 6 steals and 3 assists while Geis had 2 assists. Lexi and Kylie Schumacher each had 3 steals.
Prairie was 20 for 64 from the field, 31%, and 11 for 21 at the line, 52%.
Prairie also won a 2-quarter JV game 27-9.
Nuxoll started the scoring with a lay-up and Kamiah tied it. Prairie then scored the next 19 straight points as they took a 21-2 lead early in the second quarter.
Nuxoll put Prairie up for good with a putback then Shears made a pair of free throws. Elven stole the ball and scored then Shears scored a lay-up. Nuxoll stole the ball and scored then Lockett scored a putback. Elven made a free throw and then added a basket that made it 17-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Shears scored 2 baskets to open the second quarter and complete the scoring run.
Kamiah broke through with a basket and 2 free throws  then Prairie scored 6 straight points. Shears scored on a bank shot. Elven scored on an inbounds feed from Lockett. Shears then scored when she rebounded her own missed shot to make it 27-6. Kamiah closed out the scoring with a basket and free throw.
Shears led the scoring with 12 points with Elven scoring 7, Nuxoll 6 and Lockett 2.
Prairie dominated the boards 34-9. Nuxoll and Shears each had 8 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Elven had 4 steals while Shears had 3. Lockett, Rehder and Elven each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 12 for 40 from the field, 30%, and 3 for 4 at the line, 75%. Kamiah was 3 for 16 from the field, 19%, and 3 for 4 at the line, 75%.

At Troy
In the game at Troy the Pirates started the game strong and finished it strong. In between the two teams played mostly even/
Prairie outscored the Trojans 21-0 in the first quarter to take control of the game. Wemhoff got Prairie started with a pair of lay-ups then Lexi Schumacher hit a 3-pointer. After a free throw by Schlader, Hanson connected for 3. Lexi Schumacher Kylie Schumacher drives past a Troy defender.drove for a lay-up then Wemhoff scored on a putback. Another drive by Lexi Schumacher resulted in a lay-up. A steal by Enneking led to a lay-up by Wemhoff and Lexi Schumacher closed out the quarter with a basket.
Troy got on the board to start the second quarter and scored 5 straight points. Prairie answered with a pair of free throws by Wemhoff and a putback by Schlader to make it 25-5.
After 4 straight by Troy, Wemhoff countered by hitting 3 of 4 at the line. Troy added a free throw then Wemhoff scored on a putback. After 2 free throws by Troy, Kylie Schumacher finished the first half scoring with a free throw for a 31-12 lead at the half. Troy had outscored Prairie 10-12 in the second quarter as the Pirates hit just 2 of 23 from the field in the period.
Schlader banked in a 2-pointer to start the second half and Wemhoff added a free throw for a 34-12 lead. After Troy made 2 free throws, Prairie outscored the Trojans 10-5 the rest of the period. Kylie Schumacher had a basket and Wemhoff followed with a lay-up after a steal. After a Troy basket Kylie Schumacher made a free throw and Geis scored on an inbounds feed from Wemhoff. A Troy 3-pointer was answered by a 3 from Lexi Schumacher that made it 44-19 at the end of the third quarter.
Troy scored the first 2 points of the fourth quarter then didn’t score the rest of the game. Prairie closed the game with a 12-0 run. Kylie Schumacher made a pair of lay-ups. Elven scored after making a steal. Wemhoff scored a lay-up to put Prairie up 52-21 and start the running clock with 4:31 left.
Elven scored on a putback and Wemhoff scored a lay-up with 3:10 to play for the final points of the game. Much of the rest of the clock was eaten up by missed free throws and substitutions.
Wemhoff wound up with 22 points to lead the scoring. She nearly had a triple double as she had 11 rebounds and 8 steals. She also had 4 assists.
Lexi Schumacher scored 12. Kylie Schumacher scored 8, Schlader scored 5, Elven scored 4, Hanson scored 3 and Geis scored 2.
Prairie dominated the boards 57-25. Kylie Schumacher had 13 rebounds and Schlader had 11.
Lexi Schumacher had 5 steals.
Prairie was 22 for 87 from the field, 25%, and 9 for 16 at the line, 56%. Troy was 6 for 17 from the field, 35%, and 7 for 15 at the line, 47%.
Prairie is now 13-4 overall and 9-2 in league play.
The 2-quarter JV game was a total mismatch as Prairie wound up winning 35-0.
Troy was only able to attempt 4 shots in the game as they had 22 turnovers. The last 6:05 of the second quarter was played with a running clock after Prairie went up 31-0.
Prairie led 23-0 after the first quarter as Rehder scored 7 points while Elven scored 6, Locket 5, Shears 4 and Nuxoll 1.
In the second quarter Avery Riener stepped up with 6 points while Nuxoll, Shears and Callie Remacle scored 2each.
For the game Rehder was the leading scorer with 7 points. Shears, Elven and Riener had 6 each while Shears scored 5, Nuxoll 3 and Remacle 2.
Priarie had a 15-11 edge on the boards with Nuxoll, Elven and Riener grabbing 3 rebounds each.
Shears had 5 steals while Elven had 4. Shears had 3 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 36 from the field, 44%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. Troy was 0 for 4 from the field and didn’t attempt any free throws.
