Pirates win 1 of 3
The Prairie Pirates won just 1 of their 3 games this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 31 they traveled to Kooskia and lost to Clearwater Valley 24-32. On Friday, Feb. 3, they hosted Genesee and won 52-42. Finally on Monday, Feb. 6, they hosted Potlatch in a make-up for a game postponed due to illness Jan. 27 and lost 23-41.
At C.V.
Prairie had beaten C.V. by 17 earlier this season. This game was totally different. The main difference was that Lee Forsmann scored 33 points against the Rams while this time he scored just 8, none in the first half. Matt Wemhoff, Noah Behler and Shane Hanson play defense at C.V.
C.V. made the defensive adjustment on Forsmann by sagging defenders into the lane anytime Forsmann tried to drive to the hoop and keeping a man on him anytime he tried to put up an outside shot.
Prairie came out lethargic with C.V. taking a 3-0 lead at the 4 minute mark. Coach Tim Scheffler then subbed out his entire starting 5 and let the subs play the rest of the first quarter. C.V. upped the lead to 0-5 before Riley Shears scored at the 1:11 mark to put Prairie on the scoreboard. Levi Gehring tied it at 5-5 with a 3-pointer. C.V. then scored 2 free throws for a 5-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The starters went back in to start the second quarter and C.V. scored 5 straight for a 5-12 lead. Trenton Lorentz scored a free throw and then a basket to cut the lead to 8-12 but C.V. ended the half with a 3-pointer.
Prairie was 1 for 12 from the floor in the second quarter and 3 for 22 for the half.
Forsmann scored his first points on a putback to start the second half but the Rams answered with a pair of baskets. Shane Hanson made a free throw but C.V. answered with a basket. Noah Behler scored to make it 13-21 but C.V. again answered with a basket. Forsmann sank a 3-pointer to close out the third quarter scoring and make it 16-23.
C.V. outscored Prairie 1-7 to start the fourth quarter and take a 17-30 lead with 5:07 to play. Prairie then started putting some things together and scored 7 straight points to cut the deficit to 6 but by that time there was just 23 seconds left. Behler scored a free throw and a 3-pointer and Forsmann hit 3 of 6 free throws in that 7-0 run.
C.V. closed out the game with a pair of free throws to make the final margin 8 points.
Forsmann scored 8 to lead the Pirates in scoring. Behler scored 6. Gehring, Shears and Lorentz scored 3 each and Hanson scored 1.
C.V. had a 32-37 rebounding edge. Hanson had 9 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Shears had 4 steals and 2 assists and Bennie Elven also had 2 assists.
There was no JV game.

Vs. Genesee
In the home game against Genesee the Pirates trailed after one quarter but used a 15-3 second quarter to take control of the game.
Lee Forsmann goes for 2 of his 21 points against Genesee.Prairie trailed throughout the first quarter as Genesee opened the game with a 3-pointer and twice led by as many as 5 points at 2-7 and 6-11.
Forsmann converted a 3-point play following a steal by Behler to finish off the quarter and cut the lead to 9-11. Forsmann scored 7 of Prairie’s 9 first quarter points with Behler scoring the other 2.
Elven opened the second quarter scoring with 2 free throws to tie the game. Matt Wemhoff then gave the Pirates their first led with a baseline shot at the 7:07 mark.
Gensee scored a free throw and then a basket to retake the lead but Forsmann scored a free throw to tie it that kicked of an 11-0 run to end the half.
Shears followed with a basket following a steal by Lorentz that put Prairie ahead to stay. Behler then sank a 3 pointer. Forsmann finished out the half with a pair of free throws and then had a 3-pointer in the final seconds. That gave Prairie a 24-14 halftime lead.
Wemhoff started the second half by stealing the ball and driving for a lay-up. After a pair of Bulldog baskets, Behler scored to put the lead back to 10 at 28-18. After another Genesee basket, Lorentz scored on an inbounds feed from Wemhoff and then Forsmann converted another 3-point play for a 33-20 lead.
Genesee cut the lead back down to 10 but Prairie then ended the quarter with a 6-0 run as Lorentz, Phil Schwartz and Forsmann each scored to give Prairie a 41-25 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Genesee opened the fourth quarter scoring with a free throw but Lorentz answered with a basket that gave Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 43-26.
Genesee was able to cut into the lead but never got any closer than the final margin of 10 points.
Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 21 points. Behler scored 9, Lorentz 8, Elven 6, Wemhoff 4 and Shears and Schwartz 2 each.
Prairie had a 27-16 edge on the boards. Forsmann had 8 rebounds to lead the team while Elven added 6.
Behler had 6 steals while Lorentz had 5. Wemhoff and Behler each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 43 from the field, 44%, and 12 for 16 at the line, 75%. Genesee was 16 for 30 from the field, 53%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%.
Prairie won the 2-quarter JV game 23-14.
Nate Forsmann and Phil Schwartz each scored to give Prairie a 4-0 lead. Genesee then scored 8 straight points to take the lead.
Forsmann and Levi Gehring each scored a basket to tie the game. After Genesee took back the lead with a basket, Benny Secrest converted a 3-point play to give Prairie an 11-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
Prairie scored the first 6 points of the second quarter to take a 7 point lead. Forsmann, Schwartz and Briggs Rambo each scored a basket.
After a Genesee baskets, Gehring and Levi McElroy each sank a 3-pointer to put Prairie up 23-12 with 3:46 left. Prairie didn’t score again but all Genesee was able to score was 1 basket to cut the final margin to 9.
Forsmann scored 6 points and added 5 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Gehring scored 5 while Schwartz scored 4, Secrest and McElroy 3 each and Rambo 2.
Genesee had a 13-18 edge on the boards.
Schwartz had 2 steals and Rambo had 2 assists.
The JVs were 10 for 29 from the field, 34%, and 1 for 3 at the line, 33%. Genesee was 7 for 16 from the field, 44%, and 0 for 4 at the line.

Vs. Potlatch
In the game against the Loggers, Prairie kept it relatively close through the first half but saw Potlatch build on their lead each quarter.
The Pirates trailed just 10-14 at the end of the first quarter and 16-23 at the half. However Potlatch pushed their lead to 20-32 by the end of the third quarter and wound up outscoring the Pirates 3-9 in the fourth quarter for an 18 point win.
Hanson led the Pirates in scoring with 7 points. Forsmann scored 6. Lorentz scored 4 and Shears and Elven scored 2 each.  
Prairie is now 5-13 on the season and 4-9 in league play.
Potlatch also won the JV game 26-51.
