Pirates lose 3 games
The Prairie Pirates finished their regular season with 3 losses. On Tuesday, Feb. 7, they lost at Grangeville 37-47. On Friday, Feb. 10, they lost in overtime on Senior Night to Logos, 51-56. Finally on Monday, Feb. 13, they lost at Kendrick, 36-48.
They open District play on Wednesday, Feb. 15, as the #6 seed and will play at Potlatch at 6 p.m.
At Grangeville
In the game at Grangeville the Pirates led through much of the first half and about 6 minutes into the third quarter when Grangeville took control. Noah Behler heads down the floor against Grangeville and is being chased by his cousin Carter Mundt.
Grangeville scored first in the game but Lee Forsmann answered with a 3-pointer, the first of 5 he would make in the game.
After a Grangeville 3, Forsmann hit another 3. After a Grangeville 2-pointer, Shane Hanson gave prairie an 8-7 lead at the end of the quarter with a putback.
Forsmann and Noah Behler each made a 3 to open the second quarter and give Prairie a 14-7 lead.
Grangeville then ended the first half with 6 straight points to cut Prairie’s lead to 1 at the half, 14-13.
Hanson opened the second half with a lay-up and Forsmann followed with a 3-pointer and then a free throw. A basket by Matt Wemhoff made it an 8-0 start to the second half and gave Prairie a 22-13 lead.
After a Grangeville basket, Hanson scored a free throw for a 23-15 lead with 4:10 left in the quarter.
Things came unraveled for the Pirates after that as Grangeville closed the third quarte with a 2-14 run to take a 25-29 lead into the fourth quarter. Riley Shears scored Prairie’s only points in that run.
Grangeville then scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter before Shears hit a 3-pointers. After a Grangeville basket, Prairie fought back to cut the lead to just 1 point. Forsmann made 2 free throws, Wemhoff scored on a drive and Forsmann made his fifth 3-pointer to make it 35-36 with 3:43 left to play.
Grangeville broke the run with a basket and on Prairie’s next trip down the floor, Wemhoff wound up taking an elbow to the head on a rebound and left the game. The Pirates seemed to wilt after that and scored only 2 points the rest of the way on a pair of free throws by Shears. Meanwhile Grangeville’s Carter Mundt took over and scored Grangeville’s final 11 points.
Forsmann wound up with 18 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Shears scored 7, Hanson 5, Wemhoff 4 and Behler 3.
Prairie had a 36-28 edge on the boards led by Wemhoff and Hanson who had 8 rebounds each.
Wemhoff and Behler had 4 steals and 3 assists each.
The Pirates were 12 for 43 from the field, 28%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Grangeville was 16 for 44 from the field, 36%, and 14 for 14 at the line.
In the JV game Prairie led with 1:56 to play but couldn’t hold it as Grangeville won 44-50.
Grangeville scored first but Prairie took the lead on a basket by Briggs Rambo and a free throw by Logan Weber. Grangeville then finished the first quarter with 10 straight points for a 3-12 lead.
Grangeville held the lead for all but the final second of the second quarter. The Bulldogs took a 4-15 lead but Prairie then finished the half with a 15-2 run. Phil Schwartz scored a basket. Levi Gehring followed with 2 free throws and then scored a lay-up after making a steal. Grangeville scored a basket to make it 10-17 with 3:56 left in the half. Weber scored 2 free throws. Schwartz scored a putback. Weber added 2 more free throws. Nate Forsmann then sank a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give Prairie a 19-17 lead at the half.
Grangeville opened the second half with 2 straight baskets to retake the lead. Prairie tied it 3 times in the quarter, each time on a basket by Rambo. After the third time at 25-25, Grangeville closed the quarter with a 0-6 run to take a 25-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
Grangeville scored the first 4 of the fourth to extend their lead to 10 at 25-35.
Prairie then put together a 10-1 run to tie the game at 36. Gehring scored 2 free throws then Jackson Enneking scored a basket. Gehring added a basket then Grangeville scored a free throw. Schwartz scored a basket and then sank a 3 to tie it with 5:36 to play.
Grangeville took back the lead and held it until Rambo scored on a drive to the hoop to tie it at 40 with 2:13 left. Rambo then hit a free throw for a 41-40 Prairie lead with 1:56 to play. Grangeville then scored 6 straight to retake the lead. A 3 by Rambo with 24 seconds left cut the lead to 2 at 44-46, but Grangeville then scored the game’s final 4 points at the free throw line.
Rambo had 14 points to lead the JV’s in scoring with Schwartz scoring 10, Gehring 9, Weber 5, Forsmann 3 and Enneking 2.
Grangeville had a slim 40-41 edge on the boards. Forsmann and Weber each had 9 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Gehring had 4 steals and Forsmann had 3 assists.
Prairie was 14 for 53 from the field, 26%, and 13 for 22 at the line, 59%. Grangeville was 18 for 47 from the field, 38%, and 13 for 25 at the line, 52%.

Vs. Logos
On senior night against Logos, Hanson and Ryan Wemhoff were both honored before the game and Wemhoff got his first start of his career.

Logos came back with 5 straight points to tie it. A 3 by Shears was answered by the first of seven 3’s by Logos’ Seamus Wilson.
Behler hit a 3 for an 11-8 lead then Logos scored 8 straight to take the lead. After a lay-up by Behler, the Knights finished the first quarter with 7 straight points for a 13-23 lead.
Logos scored the first 9 points of the second quarter which included two more 3’s by Wilson as the Knights took a 13-32 lead. At that point it looked like the Knights would blow Prairie out of the gym.
Prairie then scored 8 straight with Shears scoring 4 and Trenton Lorentz and Forsmann 2 each to cut the deficit to 21-32.
Another 3 by Wilson plus a free throw put the lead back to 15. A free throw by Shears made it a 14 point game at the half, 22-36.
In a low-scoring third quarter Prairie outscored Logos 7-5 but still trailed 29-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
Forsmann sank a 3 to open the fourth but Logos responded with 2 free throws. Forsmann and Bennie Elven each scored a pair of free throws to get the lead under 10 at 36-43. After a basket by Logos, Forsmann sank 2 more free throws and Shears hit a 3 to cut the lead to 41-45 with 3:30 to play.
After a Logos basket, Forsmann made 2 free throws and Behler hit a 3 to get the Pirates within 1 at 46-47 with 1:05 left. Wilson made the second of 2 free throws for a 2-point lead but Forsmann tied it with a bank shot with 13 seconds to play.
Logos appeared to score the winning basket but the referees got together and determined the shot wasn’t made before the buzzer, sending the game to overtime. The two teams had played an overtime earlier at Moscow with Prairie winning.
Wemhoff made a free throw to give Prairie their first lead since the 4:12 mark of the first quarter but Wilson put Logos back on top with a lay-up then made 2 free throws for a 3 point lead.
Forsmann scored with 21 seconds left to cut the lead to 51-52 but Logo then made 4 straight free throws for a 5 point win.
Forsmann scored 21 points to lead the Pirates in scoring and added 8 rebounds. Shears added 11 points while Behler scored 8, Matt Wemhoff 4, Hanson 3 and Lorentz and Elven 2 each.
Logos had a 24-27 edge on the boards. Shears, Behler, Hanson, Lorentz and Forsmann each had 1 steal while Shears had 3 assists.
Wilson wound up with 37 points for Logos.
The Pirates hit 14 of 37 from the field, 38%, and 17 of 23 at the line, 74%. Logos was 18 for 48 from the field, 38%, and 14 for 19 at the line, 74%.
The loss finishes up the Pirates’ league schedule with a 4-10 record good for 6th place. As the #6 seed for District, they will play at #3 seeded Potlatch Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m.
Prairie won the JV game 31-29, also earning a season split with Logos.
Logos scored first then Prairie scored 7 straight , 5 by Forsmann and the other 2 by Gehring, to take a 7-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Neither team scored in the second quarter until Phil Schwartz drove for a lay-up at the 2:41 mark. That was Prairie’s only points of the quarter. Logos didn’t score until making a 3 with 12 seconds left. After a Prairie turnover they added a free throw to make it 9-6 at the half.
Logos then scored the first 8 points of the third quarter to take a 9-14 lead. Prairie took the lead back as Schwartz and Forsmann each made a 3. Weber scored 2 free throws to make it 17-14 and complete an 8-0 run. Logos made a free throw then Prairie closed out the third quarter with 4 straight points on a free throw by Weber and another 3 by Forsmann with 1:41 left that made it 21-15. That’s where the score stood at the end of the quarter.
Logos scored to open the fourth but Gehring responded with a 3. After another Logos basket, Schwartz made 2 free throws and Weber added a lay-up to make it 27-19.
A Logos 3 was answered by a basket by Rambo with 4:14 left that made it 29-22.
Prairie was unable to score in the final 4 minutes but held Logos to just 4 points as they held on for the win.
Forsmann had 11 points to lead the JV’s while Schwartz scored 7, Weber 6, Gehring 5 and Rambo 2.
Prairie had a 29-25 edge on the boards. Weber had 7 and Forsmann 6 to lead the Pirates.
Gehring had 3 steals and Forsmann had 2 assists.
Prairie was 10 for 29 from the field, 34%, and 7 for 13 at the line, 54%. Logos was 12 for 40 from the field, 30%, and 2 for 6 at the line, 33%.

At Kendrick
The regular season finale at Kendrick was a lot closer than the season opener against the Tigers but it was still a loss for the Pirates.
Kendrick came out strong and took a 9-18 lead by the end of the first quarter. Prairie was able to outscore them in the second quarter 11-10 to trail 20-28 at the half.
The Tigers outscored the Pirates in the third quarter 7-10 to take a 27-38 lead into the fourth quarter. They outscored the Pirates 9-12 in the final period.
Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 15 points with Behler scoring 6, Shears 5, Hanson and Elven 4 each and Matt Wemhoff 2.
With the loss Prairie ends their season with a 5-16 record. They finished their league season with a 4-10 record.
The JV game was also a lot closer than the first time as Prairie lost 32-52.
