Lady Pirates earn State berth
The Prairie Lady Pirates clinched a trip to state for the 13th straight year. In District Tournament action at Lewiston High School they got thumped by Lapwai 25-59 in the District Championship Game Wednesday, Feb. 8, but bounced back to beat Kamiah 53-42 in the second place game on Thursday, Feb. 9.
That earned them a trip to the State Tournament at Nampa’s Columbia High School.
Vs. Lapwai
Prairie’s one bright spot in the game against Lapwai came when Lexi Schumacher grabbed the ball off the opening tap and drove to the basket for a lay-up and a 2-0 Prairie lead. Kristin Wemhoff plays defense against Lapwai. Also shown is Tara Schlader.
Lapwai then took control of the game with a 12-0 run that was all 3-pointers.
Prairie scored again when Tara Schlader made a lay-up at the 2:20 mark. Lapwai then hit another 3-pointer plus a 3-point play before Schlader scored another lay-up. Lapwai closed out the first quarter with their 6th triple of the period for a 6-21 lead.
Lapwai defensively made sure every Prairie shot attempt was a contested one and it showed in the shooting percentages as Prairie was 3 for 15 in the first quarter, 1 for 10 in the second and 2 for 15 in the third.
Lapwai meanwhile crisply moved the ball around on offense until they got the ball to someone with an open look. The 6 first quarter 3-pointers were by 4 different players.
Lapwai continued the onslaught in the second quarter scoring the first 5 points on two free throws and another triple before Sage Elven broke the drought with 2 free throws. Lapwai then scored 10 straight points for an 8-36 lead before Elven scored in the final seconds to make it 10-36 at the half.
Lapwai scored the first 9 points of the third quarter before Hailey Hanson made 2 free throws at the 3:18 mark.
Prairie was down 15-51 with 2:20 left in the third when they finally were able to put some back-to-back scoring together. Kristin Wemhoff, Prairie’s leading scorer on the season, scored her first points of the game at the 2:15 mark of the third quarter. Schlader then made a pair of free throws and Wemhoff hit 3 of 4 attempts as Prairie closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to make it 22-51 after 3 quarters.
Lapwai scored 33 seconds into the fourth quarter to push the lead back over 30 and invoke the running clock for the rest of the game.
Schlader wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 7 points. Elven scored 6 and Wemhoff 5. Lexi Schumacher, Hanson and Kylie Schumacher each scored 2 points and Kaylie Lockett scored 1.
Lapwai wound up making eleven 3-pointers for more than half of their total points.
Lapwai also outrebounded Prairie 36-44. Wemhoff and Elven each had 8 to lead the Pirates while Schlader added 7 boards.
Lexi Schumacher had 4 steals and Hanson had 2 assists.
Prairie was 7 for 44 from the field, 16%, and 11 for 20 at the line, 55%. Lapwai was 20 for 54 from the field, 37%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%.

Vs. Kamiah
The Lady Pirates came back strong in the second place game against Kamiah as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Lexi Schumacher opened the scoring with a 3-pointer this time. Kylie Schumacher followed with a free throw. Schlader drove for a lTara Schlader puts up a shot against Kamiah in the second place game at District.ay-up and a steal by Enneking led to a lay-up by Wemhoff.
Kamiah finally got on the scoreboard at the 4:26 mark. That was followed by a lay-up by Kylie Schumacher and a 3-pointer by Wemhoff that made it 13-2.
After another Kamiah basket Kylie Schumacher scored another lay-up and Hanson followed with a 3-pointer on and inbounds play to make it 18-4. Kamiah added a free throw to make it 18-5 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter a basket each by Kylie Schumacher and Wemhoff made it 22-5. Kamiah then put together their first run of the game scoring 7 straight to cut the deficit to 10 at 22-12. Wemhoff then connected on another 3-pointer and followed that with a shot from that corner that was almost 3-point distance to make it 27-12. After 3 free throws by the Kubs, Schlader and Wemhoff each made a free throw to make it 29-15 at the half.
The Kubs scored the first 4 points of the second half then Schlader scored the next 4 on a hook shot and then 2 free throws. Kamiah then outscored Prairie 2-5 to cut the lead to 11 at 35-24 with a putback by Kylie Schumacher being Prairie’s points. Prairie then went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 18 at 42-24. Kylie Schumacher and Elven each made a pair of free throws. Wemhoff then made the first of 2 free throws and Kylie Schumacher capped the run with another putback. Kamiah sank a 3-pointer to close out the quarter. That left Prairie with a 42-27 lead heading into the fourth.
Kamiah never got any closer that the 11 point margin at the finish and that only came on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Prairie made 6 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep their lead at about 14-15 points most of the period. Lexi Schumacher hit a 3 after Kamiah got it down to 12 to push the lead back to 15. Wemhoff scored the only other basket of the quarter at the 1:14 mark after Kamiah had pulled within 13. That made it 51-36. Wemhoff added a free throw to make it 52-36 with 39 seconds left.
Prairie had 3 players score in double figures led by Wemhoff who had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kylie Schumacher also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Schlader just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Lexi Schumacher scored 7 with Hanson scoring 3 and Elven 2.
Prairie had a 42-34 advantage on the boards.
Wemhoff had 3 steals and 5 assists. Hanson and Kylie Schumacher each had 2 steals while Schlader had 3 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 57 from the field, 28%, and 16 for 26 at the line, 62%. Kamiah was 12 for 36 from the field, 33%, and 12 for 22 at the line, 55%.
Freshman Emma Krogh led the Kubs in scoring and rebounds with 15 points and 12 rebounds. 9 of her points came on 3-pointers in the final 1:30 of the game.
Prairie takes a record of 19-5 into the state tournament.
