Pirates split District games
The Prairie Pirates split their first two games at the District Tournament and were still alive as of Tuesday. On Wednesday, Feb. 15, they traveled to Potlatch and lost 24-41. On Monday, Feb. 20 they played Clearwater Valley in a loser out game at Lewiston High School and lived to play another day with a 48-39 win. . . .

Lady Pirates take third at State
The Prairie Lady Pirates brought home the third place trophy from the 1A-D1 State Tournament at Nampa. They opened the tournament with a 67-23 win over Greenleaf on Thursday, Feb. 16. On Friday, Feb. 17 they let a 6 point lead with 4:45 slip away as they lost 40-46 to Raft River of Malta. Finally on Saturday, Feb. 18, they got a measure of redemption by beating Lapwai 58-47 in the third place game after losing 4 previous games this season to the Wildcats. . . .

Patriot boys win District opener
The St. John Bosco Patriots extended their season by at least 2 more games with a 67-51 win over Highland in an elimination game at Craigmont Monday, Feb. 20. . . .
The Patriots lost to Kendrick Tuesday, Feb. 21, 55-69 and were to play Deary in a loser out game on Wednesday, Feb. 23. That game was postponed to Thursday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at Lapwai. The winner of that game plays Friday at 6 p.m. for a trip to State.

The Prairie Lady Pirates were all smiles after beating Lapwai for third place at State. They were also awarded as Academic State Champions for 1A, Division 1 for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.934. Ski Skoop—The last couple of weeks we’ve had quite a bit of family fun! Some days are snowy and others are sunny, either way the skiing has been great. We are looking forward to Saturday the 25th, we are extending our hours for the day! We will be open from 10AM to 8PM. We will start our half day rates at 4 so bring the family up and enjoy a little night skiing. Sunday the 26th we will return to our regular hours. Photo by Tonya Schumacher. Nine-year old Axel Forsmann won the local Elks hoop shoot competition, which qualified him to compete in the District competition in Lewiston on Jan 11th where in a shoot-off, he placed 1st with an 18 out of 25 finish. He was rewarded with a 2 night trip to Kellogg to compete for the state championship. He placed 4th in that competition, shooting 18 out of 25. The 1st place finisher shot 20 and the 2nd & 3rd place winners both shot 19. Prairie Mountain Nutrition, Cottonwood, and Craigmountain, Winchester,  Senior Citizens were recipients of “Leading Idaho” grant funds  to upgrade meal site locations to improve services, safety and efficiency.  Each site received $10,000 to use for upgrades and equipment.   The Modernization, Enhancement, Accessibility, Leverage grant was used to purchase a new glass front, double convection oven in Cottonwood.  Essential equipment for the kitchen was also purchased with the remaining grant funds. The Prairie Mountain Nutrition Board members admired the new double convection oven in the lower level of the Cottonwood Community Hall.  The oven and extra kitchen equipment was purchased with $10,000 in M.E.A.L grant funds. Jake Wren was posthumously awarded the Sportsmanship T-Shirt at the Girls State Tournament. Accepting for Jake were his daughters Annette Wemhoff, Shelley Schlader, Cindy Higgins and Julie Schumacher. The shirts they are wearing are the same as the warm-ups the team wears that say “Make No Mistake, We are Playing for Jake” on the back. Click on the photo for a larger view.

The Prairie 5th grade boys team which won their bracket at the recent 5th and 6th grade basketball tournament hosted by Prairie. Volunteers spent last Saturday, Feb. 18, painting approximately 260 sheets of plywood that will go inside the new gymnasium, currently under construction as part of the Angelus Center at St. John Bosco at Cottonwood. The academy expansion will provide an approximate 26,000-square-foot gym and theater complex located south of the existing school building. The complex will accommodate seating for more than 600 people, and the theater at nearly 300 people. Colleen Chmelik is in the top photo and Jade Prigge in the lower photo.
