Pirates split District games
The Prairie Pirates split their first two games at the District Tournament and were still alive as of Tuesday. On Wednesday, Feb. 15, they traveled to Potlatch and lost 24-41. On Monday, Feb. 20 they played Clearwater Valley in a loser out game at Lewiston High School and lived to play another day with a 48-39 win.
At Potlatch

Prairie was scoreless for the first 7:30 of the game as Potlatch built a 0-8 lead. Lee Forsmann scored the Pirates first points on a putback with 30 seconds left in the quarter then missed a free throw that would have given him a 3-point play. Prairie trailed 2-8 after 1 period.
Potlatch made it 2-12 in the second quarter before Prairie got their second basket of the game at the 3:55 mark when Riley Shears made a 3-pointer. That turned out to be their only points of the second quarter. Potlatch finished the half with a 0-8 run for a 5-20 halftime lead.
The Pirates were playing defense well enough against the Loggers but just couldn’t score.
In the third quarter Potlatch scored first but Shane Hanson and Matt Wemhoff each scored to make it 9-22. After a 0-5 run by Potlatch, Hanson scored back-to-back baskets to make it 13-27. A Potlatch free throw made it 13-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
Potlatch scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter before Noah Behler scored on a reverse lay-up. After 3 points by the Loggers, Shears made the first of 2 free throws and then Behler hit a 3-pointer to make it 19-35 with 2:45 left.
Two Logger baskets were answered by a 3 by Shears. After another Potlatch basket, Phil Schwartz scored the game’s final 2 points at the free throw line.
Shears led the Pirates in scoring with just 7 points. Hanson scored 6, Behler 5 and Wemhoff, Forsmann and Schwartz 2 each. Potlatch was led by Jaxon Vowels who scored 18.
Potlatch had a 26-35 edge on the boards. Forsmann led Prairie with 9 rebounds with Hanson adding 7 rebounds.
Forsmann had 3 steals while Wemhoff, Behler and Shears had 2 each. Behler had 4 assists while Hanson had 2.
Prairie was 9 for 34 from the field, 26%, and 3 for 13 at the line, 23%. Potlatch was 18 for 49 from the field, 37%, and 4 for 6 at the line, 67%.

Vs. C.V.
In the loser-out game against C.V. it was a 13-0 run early on that put the Pirates in control.
It was slow going at the start as neither team scored for the first 2 minutes. Forsmann scored the game’s first points at the 5:51 mark.

A steal by Wemhoff led to another basket by Forsmann that put Prairie ahead with 3:46 left in the opening quarter. That kicked off the aforementioned 13-0 run. Forsmann scored again to make it 6-3. Wemhoff stole the ball and scored. Forsmann made the first of 2 free throws and Wemhoff capped off the first quarter with another steal and drive for a lay-up. That made it 11-3 at the quarter break.
Wemhoff opened the second quarter scoring with a free throw and Bennie Elven scored on an inbounds play to make it 15-3.
C.V. finally broke the run with a basket by Landon Schlieper. Prairie answered with a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Behler and a lay-up by Wemhoff after a steal by Shears. That put the Pirates up 20-5.
Hanson scored Prairie’s only points in a 2-7 C.V. run that cut the lead to 10. However Forsmann convert a 3-point play for the final points of the half to give Prairie a 25-12 halftime lead.
C.V. quickly cut the lead to 9 to start the third quarter but a 3 by Shears and a lay-up by Hanson pushed the lead back to 14 at 30-16.
The Rams again cut the lead to 9 but 2 lay-ups by Shears gave Prairie a 34-21 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Elven and Shears each scored to open the fourth and put Prairie up 38-21.
After a C.V. basket Logan Weber scored and Behler made 2 free throws to five Prairie their biggest lead of the game at 42-23.
Schlieper tried to get the Rams back in the game by scoring all of C.V.’s points in a 2-13 run that got the Rams back within 8 at 44-36. Hanson scored Prairie’s 2 points in that run.
The downside for the Rams is that there was only 36 seconds left when they got the deficit down to 8. Forsmann broke the run with a pair of free throws. After another Schlieper basket, Behler made 2 more free throws with 13 seconds left to make it 48-37. C.V. scored the final points just before the buzzer.
Forsmann wound up with 12 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Shears scored 9, Wemhoff 8, Behler 7, Hanson 6, Elven 4 and Weber 2.
C.V. had a 26-36 advantage on the boards. Forsmann had 7 and Wemhoff 6 to lead the Pirates.
Prairie forced 34 turnovers from the Rams. Wemhoff had 6 steals while Shears had 5 and Hanson had 4. 22 of the 34 turnovers came on steals. Shears and Wemhoff each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 50 from the field, 38%, and 8 for 15 at the line, 53%. C.V. was 13 for 34 from the field, 38%, and 10 for 12 at the line, 83%.
Prairie is now 6-17 on the season.
