Vs. Raft River
Kristin Wemhoff goes for a lay-up against Raft River.Based on how both teams did in their opening round games the Prairie vs. Raft River second round game looked to be a close matchup. And that is the way it turned out.
Prairie took a 4-0 lead on a pair of baskets by Schlader but Raft River then took their first lead on a 3-pointer and a 2-point basket to make it 4-5.
Schlader tied it with a free throw then the Trojans took back the lead. Elven tied it at 7. After another Raft River basket, Wemhoff tied it at 9-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Raft River opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer and held the lead until Wemhoff and Lexi Schumacher scored on back to back baskets to make it 15-14. The lead changed hands 4 more times over the next 2 minutes as the teams traded baskets. A 3 by Lexi Schumacher gave Prairie a 20-18 lead with 2:00left in the half. Vs. Lapwai
It took 5 tries but the Lady Pirates finally were able to beat Lapwai this season. And it was with State hardware on the line. Kylie Schumacher gets fouled as she attempts to shoot against Lapwai.
Both teams were coming off of disappointing losses the night before and had expected to meet for the state championship rather than for third place. Prairie came out of the gate with a little more “want to” than Lapwai did.
Although Lapwai got the opening tap, Lexi Schumacher wound up grabbing the ball and took it to the basket for the game’s first points.
Lapwai answered with a tying basket but Prairie then took the lead for good on a full-court drive for a lay-up by Wemhoff. Wemhoff added a baseline jumper to make it 6-2.
After a Lapwai free throw, Prairie put together a 6-0 run. Lexi Schumacher scored a lay-up on a feed from Schlader. Schlader then made 2 free throws and Wemhoff scored with an assist from Kylie Schumacher to make it 12-3.
A Lapwai 3 was answered by a 3 from Lexi Schumacher. A bank shot by Schlader and a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher closed out the first quarter with Prairie up 19-6.
Lapwai opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer but Prairie matched that with a putback by Lexi Schumacher and a free throw by Schlader.
Lapwai scored 5 points against a free throw by Schlader to cut the lead to 10. After a basket inside by Schlader, Lapwai’s Jailyn McCormack-Marks sank a 3 to cut the lead to 9. Prairie answered with a lay-up each by Elven and Kylie Schumacher. Another 3 by McCormack-Marks was answered by a 3 by Lexi Schumacher with 22 seconds left. Then Prairie ended the half with a shot that left the crowd in a frenzy. Wemhoff put up a buzzer-beater from near the sideline at half-court that seemed to just stick on the rim before dropping through the hoop to make it 35-19 at the half.
Prairie opened the second half with a 3-pointer by Kylie Schumacher that made it 38-19.
Then came the run that all Prairie fans knew was going to come from Lapwai (although it never did the night before against Oakley). The Wildcats scored 13 straight points to cut the lead down to 38-32 with 3:32 left in the quarter.
A lay-up by Elven broke the 4 plus minute scoring drought for the Pirates and kicked off a quarter-ending 8-0 run. Schlader scored a pair of baskets and Wemhoff a lay-up to give Prairie a 46-32 lead after 3 quarters.
Lexi Schumacher made it a 10-0 run with 2 free throws to open the fourth quarter. Lapwai answered with Qubilah Mitchell sinking 3 of 4 free throws. Schlader came back with a pair of free throws then Skylin Parrish made a basket for Lapwai.
Lexi Schumacher converted a 3-point play and Kylie Schumacher made 2 free throws to push the lead to 18 at 55-37 with 3:25 to play. In the final 3:25 Prairie was limited to just 3 free throws by Schlader but Lapwai wasn’t able to get any closer than the final margin of 11 points.
Lexi Schumacher led the Lady Pirates in scoring with 19 points, 4 more than she had totaled in the previous 4 games against Lapwai this season. Schlader scored 17, Wemhoff 11, Kylie Schumacher 7 and Elven 4.
Prairie dominated the boards 47-30 with Schlader pulling down 17 to lead the Pirates. Kylie Schumacher was also in double figures with 10.
Schlader and Wemhoff each had 3 steals and Schlader and Hanson each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 20 for 60 from the field, 33%, and 13 for 20 at the line, 65%. Lapwai was 15 for 46 from the field, 33%, and 10 for 18 at the line, 56%.
It should be noted that Lapwai was playing without their only senior, Lauren Gould, who was injured on the final play of their game against Oakley the night before. Also, last year’s state tournament player of the year, Jordyn McCormack-Marks, was so ineffective on the court in this game that her coach benched her in the second quarter and she never got back on the court. Some of that may be due to a leg injury she suffered against Oakley although she was able to finish that game.
Also, with the double digit lead late in the game, coach Lori Mader was able to sub out her two senior starters, Schlader and Wemhoff, to applause from the fans. She also put senior sub Enneking into the game to finish her senior season on the floor.
Prairie finishes the season with a record of 21-6.
