St. John Bosco wins District opener Updated ST. JOHN BOSCO GIRLS & BOYS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE FOR 2022-23The St. John Bosco Patriots extended their season by at least 2 more games with a 67-51 win over Highland in an elimination game at Craigmont Monday, Feb. 20. Highland scored the game’s first 2 points but Cody Wassmuth tied it with a lay-up and a steal by Tory Chmelik led to him scoring on a putback for the Patriots’ first lead. Highland took the lead back on a 3-pointer by Noah Watson but the Clay Weckman answered with a 3 to put the Patriots up for good. Cody Wassmuth stole the ball and scored to make it 9-5. After a Highland basket, Weckman hit another 3 to make it 12-7. Highland was able to twice cut the lead to 2, the first at 16-14. Luke Stubbers answered with a 3 to make it 19-14 but Watson answered with a 3 to make it 19-17 at the end of the first quarter. Cody Wassmuth opened the second quarter with 2 free throws to kick off a 10-2 run that opened up the lead. Levi Wassmuth scored a basket, Cody a free throw, Highland a basket, then Cody Wassmuth a lay-up and a 3-pointer for a 29-19 lead with 5:30 left in the half. After 3 points by Highland, Cody Wassmuth hit another 3. Clay Weckman scored a basket and then a free throw and Noah Beckman scored a basket for a 37-22 lead. Highland scored the final 4 points of the half to make it 37-26. The closest the Huskies got in the second half was 9 points after scoring the first points of the second half. Levi and Cody Wassmuth each scored a baskets to push the lead back to 13. The lead held at 12-15 points until the Patriots put together a 9-0 run to end the third quarter. Cody Wassmuth made 2 baskets, Matthew Warren converted a 3-point play and Cody Wassmuth finished the quarter with a drive to the hoop to make it 56-35. SJB opened the fourth quarter with a 10-5 run to extend the lead to 26 points at 66-40. John Uhlenkott scored a pair of baskets. Levi Wassmuth scored a lay-up and Cody Wassmuth finished the run with a rare 4-point play as he was fouled on a made 3-pointer. Highland outscored the Patriots 1-11 over the final 5:04 with Warren scoring the Patriots’ lone point. Cody Wassmuth wound up with a game high 31 points. Clay Weckman was also in double figures with 11. Levi Wassmuth scored 8, Warren 6, Uhlenkott 4, Stubbers 3 and Chmelik and Beckman 2 each. The Patriots had a 52-46 edge on the boards led by Stubbers, Chmelik and Stallone Hoene with 7 each. Cody Wassmuth had 7 steals while Clay Weckman had 6 as the Patriots forced the Huskies into 27 turnovers, 20 by steals. Cody Wassmuth also had 7 assists. The Patriots were 27 for 74 from the field, 36%, and 7 for 18 from the line, 39%. Highland was 18 for 50 from the field, 36%, and 10 for 24 at the line, 42%. The Patriots are now 7-8 on the season.
