Pirates swept by Kellogg
The Prairie Pirates dropped a season opening doubleheader against Kellogg 6-10 and 1-13 at Lewiston’s Clearwater Field Saturday, March 11. Noah Behler rounds first with Prairie's first hit of the new baseball season.
Noah Behler started on the mound for the Pirates and it took him 3 batters to get the strike zone located. He gave up a leadoff single on a 3-2 count and then walked the next 2 batters to load the bases. After a strikeout, he gave up a run on a sacrifice fly to right field. Another run scored on a blooper that dropped behind third base just inside the foul line. He then got out of the inning on a popup to shortstop Kaden Duclos.
Kellogg’s starting pitcher also took a couple of batters to find the strike zone as he walked leadoff hitter Cody Kaschmitter on 4 pitches. Kaschmitter stole second and went to third when the throw got past the second baseman.Colton McElroy also walked on 4 pitches. A passed ball scored Kaschmitter and sent McElroy to second. Kellogg then got the next 3 hitters out as they held on to a 1-2 lead after 1 inning.
A walk and 2 errors led to 2 more runs by Kellogg in the second inning.
Prairie’s only baserunner in the bottom of the second came when Duclos was hit by a pitch.
In the third, Behler gave up a leadoff single and a 2-out walk but didn’t allow any runs.
In the bottom of the third, Behler collected Prairie’s first hit of the game, a 2-out single to left. He went to third when Jake Quintal reached on a passed ball on strike 3 and a throwing error. However Prairie was unable to score.
Behler gave up 3 straight hits and a run to start the fourth inning and then got a popout before running up against the pitch count limit. McElroy went to the mound and he struggled to find the strike zone, walking 3 straight batters with 2 runs scoring on wild pitches. It might have been 3 but catcher Kaschmitter was able to pounce on one of the pitches that got past him and throw to McElroy who tagged out the runner coming from third. McElroy then struck out a batter to get out of the inning.
Prairie went down in order in the bottom of the fourth.
McElroy struck out the lead off hitter in the fifth then walked 5 straight hitters, forcing home 2 runs, before getting out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Prairie got back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with a 2-out rally. Kaschmitter beat out a grounder to short for a hit. McElroy beat out an infield hit to short as well. Kaschmitter stole third and then scored on a balk to make it 2-9 after 5 innings.
McElroy gave up a single and a walk but no runs in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth Carter Shears was hit by a pitch but the inning ended on a double play.
In the sixth, Owen McIntire went to the mound and gave up a leadoff walk. After a stolen base and a groundout, the runner scored on a wild pitch. Another hitter reached on an error but McIntire got out of the inning with no further damage.
In the bottom of the seventh Prairie got 2 quick outs then put together a rally. Dylan Uhlenkott drew a walk and Kaschmitter followed with a single. McElroy doubled to center to score both runners. McElroy then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Behler was hit by a pitch and Quintal walked. Shears then doubled home Behler to cut the deficit to 6-10. Duclos walked to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. However a strikeout ended the game.
Prairie had 6 hits in the game. McElroy had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Kaschmitter had 2 singles and scored 3 runs. Shears and a double and an RBI. Behler had a single.
Behler allowed 6 runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and 4 walks in 3 1/3 innings. McElroy gave up 3 runs on 1 hit with 6 strikeouts and 8 walks in 2 2/3 innings. McIntire gave up 1 run on not hits with 1 strikeout and 1 walk.
Prairie was no hit in the second game with their only run coming in the top of the fifth inning in a game that ended on the 10-run mercy rule after the top of the fifth.
Kellogg pounded out 10 hits and scored 13 runs. They scored 4 in the first inning, 3 in the second and 6 in the third.
Eli Hinds started on the mound for the Pirates. Quintal came on in relief in the third but struggled with Kaschmitter also going to the mound in the third. Levi McElroy pitched in the fourth.
