Pirates swep Genesee
The Prairie baseball team swept a doubleheader at Genesee Friday, April 14, winning 18-2 and 16-5. The first game ended after 3 innings on the 15-run mercy rule and the second game ended after 5 innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
A game that had been scheduled for Tuesday, April 11 against Lewis County was postponed by weather and will be made up on Tuesday, April 25 as part of a doubleheader at Lewis County with games starting at 3 and 5 p.m.
Game 1
In the opening game, Prairie starting pitcher Colton McElroy gave up a leadoff single. A stolen base and 2 passed ball led to a run. McElroy then struck out the side to get out of the inning.Colton McElroy pitched the first game at Genesee allowing just 1 hit and 2 runs while striking out 9 in a 3-inning game won by the Pirates 18-2
McElroy then led off the bottom of the first with a double to the right field corner. McElroy stole third. Phil Schwartz followed with a walk and Cody Kaschmitterscored McElroy with a sacrifice fly to center. Schwartz stole second, then went to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches. Eli Hinds was hit by a pitch and stole second. Noah Behler singled down the left field line, scoring Hinds. An infield single by Carter Shears saw Behler go to third on the throw to first. A wild pitch scored Behler with Shears moving to second. Jake Quintal singled up the middle to score Shears. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After a second out, Logan Weber beat out an infield hit that scored Quintal. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. McElroy got his second double of the inning, this time over the centerfielder’s head, to score Weber. Schwartz beat out an infield single to moved McElroy to third. Kaschmitter singled to score McElroy and make it 8-0 after 1 inning.

Prairie added 3 more runs in the bottom of the second. Behler reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored when the catcher’s throw to third went into left field. Shears singled up the middle, stole second and then stole third. He scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Quintal. Dylan Uhlenkott reached on an error, stole second and third and scored on a groundout by Weber to make it 11-0. McElroy walked and stole second but was left on base after the third out.
In the third inning, McElroy got 2 strikeouts then gave up 2 walks. A stolen base and 2 errors led to a second run scoring. McElroy then got his 9th strikeout to end the inning.
Prairie needed 6 runs in the bottom of the third to end the game on the 15-run rule.
Kaschmitter led off the inning with a triple to left center. After an out, Kaschmitter scored on a groundout by Behler. Shears and Quintal both reached on errors. Uhlenkott then singled to right and when the right fielder misplayed the ball, wound up at third base with both runners scoring. Weber was hit by a pitch. Uhlenkott scored when he beat the throw home on McElroy’s infield grounder. Schwartz walked to load the bases. Weber scored on a single to left by Kaschmitter and both McElroy and Schwartz scored on Hinds’ single to center to end the game.
McElroy gave up just 1 hit with 2 walks and 2 runs. He got all 9 outs in the game via strikeout.
Prairie meanwhile had 13 hits. Kaschmitter had a triple and 2 singles and 3 RBI. McElroy had 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Shears had 2 singles. Hinds, Behler, Quintal and Weber each had a single and 2 RBI. Uhlenkott had a single and an RBI and Schwartz had a single as everyone in the lineup had at least 1 hit.

Game 2
Prairie was the away team in the second game and scored 7 runs in the top of the first. McElroy led off with a single to right. Collin Ray bunted and the catcher threw the ball into right field with McElroy advancing to third and Ray to second. Dylan Uhlenkott pulls into third with a second game triple at Genesee.Kaschmitter beat out and infield hit to score McElroy. Hinds reached on an error to load the bases. Behler singled to score Ray. Shears then forced Behler at second with Kaschmitter scoring. Hinds scored on a groundout by Quintal. Uhlenkott then tripled to the left field corner to score Shears. Uhlenkott scored on an infield single by Kaden Duclos. Duclos stole second and scored on a single to right by McElroy.
Behler started on the mound in the second game and had a rocky start as he walked the leadoff hitter and gave up a bloop single. The leadoff hitter rounded third and got caught in a rundown, eventually getting tagged out. A double scored a run before Behler got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Prairie added another 7 runs in the second inning. Kaschmitter reached on an error when the second baseman dropped a short fly ball. Hinds walked and both runners moved up on a groundout. Shears beat out an infield hit to score Kaschmitter. After a second out, Quintal reached on an error with Hinds scoring. Uhlenkott doubled with Quintal advancing to third. Duclos singled to right to scored both runners. McElroy doubled to left with Duclos advancing to third. Duclos scored on an infield hit by Ray. McElroy scored on a single up the middle by Kaschmitter. Hinds doubled to score Ray. Behler walked to load the bases before Genesee got out of the inning no trailing 14-1.
In the bottom of the second Behler hit the leadoff batter on an 0-2 pitch but then struck out the side.
In the third inning Quintal reached on an error and Uhlenkott walked. After an out, Chris Schumacher beat out an infield hit that loaded the bases. An error on a pickoff attempt allowed Quintal to score. That made it 15-1.
Behler got Genesee out in order in the bottom of the third on 2 strikeouts and a comebacker to the mound.
In the fourth Levi McElroy got a pinch-hit double hitting for Behler. Quintal drew a 2-out walk but both runners were stranded.
Levi McElroy took over on the mound in the bottom of the fourth. An error put the leadoff hitter all the way to third base. He scored on a wild pitch. After an out, Levi McElroy gave up a walk and a bloop single before getting out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout to first.
In the fifth Duclos was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. An errant pickoff throw put him on second and a passed ball sent him to third. After an out, Duclos scored on a single by Ray.
That made it 16-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
An error put the leadoff hitter on and a wild pitch sent him to second. A double to center scored the runner. After an out, Levi McElroy hit a batter. A wild pitch scored a run and sent the other runner to second. He induced a groundout to second with a run scoring. He then got a strike to end the game on the 10-un mercy rule.
Behler gave up 1 run on 2 hits in 3 innings with 1 walk, 1 hit batsman and 7 strikeouts. Levi McElroy gave up 4 runs on 2 hits in 2 innings with 1 hit batsman, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Prairie had 15 hits led by Colton McElroy had had a double and 2 singles and an RBI. He wound up 5 for 6 in the doubleheader with 3 doubles. Kaschmitter had 2 singles and 2 RBI and was also 5 for 6 on the day. Uhlenkott had a triple and a double and an RBI. Duclos had 2 singles and 3 RBI. Hinds had a double and an RBI. Levi McElroy had a double. Shears had a single and 2 RBI. Behler and Ray each had a single and an RBI. Schumacher had a single.
It was the first sweep of a doubleheader, or for that matter both league games during a season, by Prairie over Genesee since 2016. In 2016 Prairie won the games by just 1 and 2 runs.
With the wins Prairie is now 6-4 on the season and 5-1 in league play.
