Pirates edge Tigers 2-1 The Prairie baseball team finally got to play on their home field on Thursday, April 27, and won a pitcher’s duel against Kendrick 2-1. Meanwhile the JV team lost to Kendrick 3-14. Varsity vs. Kendrick It was a rematch of the
same two starting pitchers as the game at Kendrick where the Tigers’ Ty
Koepp prevailed over the Pirates Noah Behler 0-2.This time Behler had the upper hand holding the Tigers to just 4 hits and 1 run. In the top of the first Koepp led off with a single to center and went to second on an error in the outfield. He advanced to third on a groundout. Behler then got out of the inning with a strikeout and a flyball out to center. Prairie took the lead in the bottom of the first when Phil Schwartz walked and stole second. He scored on Eli Hinds’ single to right field for a 1-0 lead. Kendrick had a leadoff double in the second inning. The runner was erased on a strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out double play as catcher Cody Kaschmitter caught the baserunner stealing at third with Dylan Uhlenkott applying the tag. Prairie went down in order in the bottom of the second as did Kendrick in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third Colton McElroy hit a 1-out double and Schwartz followed with a bunt single but both runners were stranded. Kendrick was set down in order again in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth Behler led off with a single to left. Kaden Duclos subbed in as a courtesy runner and stole second. Carter Shears reached when Kendrick tried to get Duclos in a rundown but Duclos wound up sliding safely back into second base. Jake Quintal then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Uhlenkott hit a slow grounder to short. Duclos was able to score while Shears was forced out at third. That made it 2-0 in favor of the Pirates. After a pop-up. McElroy reached on an infield single to reload the bases before Kendrick got the third out. Behler gave up a 2-out single in the top of the fifth before getting out of the inning with a groundout to first. Cody Kaschmitter led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to center. He stole second with the throw going into centerfield. He then was put out trying to advance to third. Kendrick scored their only run in the sixth after a 1-out walk. A single moved the runner to second. The leader runner went to third on a passed ball and then wound up scoring as Prairie got the trail runner into a rundown before putting him out. A strikeout ended the inning. Kendrick changed pitchers for the bottom of the 6th and the new pitcher set the Pirates down in order. In the top of the 7thBehler got a pop up to shot and then McElroy made a great running catch of a fly ball to right center for the second out. Behler then hit the next batter on a 1-1 pitch. On the first pitch to the next batter, the runner on first tried to steal and Cody Kaschmitter gunned him out at second with Schwartz applying the tag to end the game. Bahler game up 1 run on 4 hits with 1 walk and 1 hit batsman and 7 strikeouts. Prairie had 7 hits led by McElroy who had a double and a single. Hinds and a single and an RBI. Schwartz, Kaschmitter, Behler and Quintal each had a single. Uhlenkott had the other RBI. Prairie is now 9-3 in league play and 10-6 overall. In the JV game Kendrick used 3 different pitchers to no-hit the Pirates in a 3-14 win in 5 innings. Levi McElroy started on the mound for the Pirates and gave up a pair of walks to start the game. Both eventually scored. McElroy walked 2 more batters but left them on base as he got out of the inning with a fly ball out to right field. Prairie took their only lead in the bottom of the first. Uhlenkott led off with a walk and stole second. He went to third on a bad throw by the catcher. Schwartz reached on an error with Uhlenkott scoring. Schwartz stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. Levi McElroy walked and stole second. Owen McIntire was hit by a pitch. Logan Weber grounded out to second with McElroy scoring on the play to make it 3-2. After a second out, Collin Ray and Kaden Duclos were each hit by a pitch to load the bases. However a strikeout ended the inning. Weber went to the mound in the second inning and gave up 2 hits and 3 walks to the first 5 hitters he faced. 4 of them scored as Kendrick took a 3-6 lead. Uhlenkott was hit by a pitch leading off the second for the Pirates but the next 3 batters were all put out. Carter Shears went to the mound in the third inning. He gave up 5 hits including a 3-run homer and 4 more runs as Kendrick stretched their lead to 3-10. In the bottom of the third Prairie faced a new pitcher with Levi Gehring drawing a 1-out walk. He stole second but was put out when he tried to steal third. Schwartz went to the mound in the fourth and pitched the final 2 innings. He gave up 4 hits and hit a batter in the fourth which, along with 3 errors, led to 4 more Kendrick runs. In the bottom of the fourth Duclos reached on an error to lead off the inning. He stole second and went to third on a groundout. Duclos tried to score on a wild pitch but was put out at home. Uhlenkott struck out but reached first on a passed ball. He stole second but was then put out trying to steal third to end the inning. Schwartz got through the fifth inning allowing just a 2-out baserunner who reached on an error. Kendrick sent a third pitcher to the mound in the fifth with Levi McElroy being the only baserunner when he reached on an error. Prairie played a JV doubleheader against Troy at Lewiston on Friday, April 28, but we have no information on those games.
