Pirates finish 4th at District
It is a good thing the Prairie baseball team had already qualified for State as they struggled at the District finals in Orofino Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13, getting shut out twice. They lost to Troy 0-9 on Friday and lost 0-18 on Saturday to Potlatch.
They will go into the State Tournament as the #4 seed from the north and will face southern Idaho District Champion Vision Charter at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at Church Field in Lewiston.
Vs. Troy
In the district opener against Troy Eli Hinds started on the mound and got through the first inning giving up just a 1-out walk. Eli Hinds was the starter against Troy at District.
In the bottom of the first Colton McElroy led off with a single to left and went to second when the left fielder let the ball get away. Phil Schwartz sacrificed McElroy to third but he wound up stranded there as a strikeout and a lineout ended the inning.
In the bottom of the second Hinds gave up 2 walks but also had 2 strikeouts before a single to right scored 2 runs. 2 errors followed leading to a third run before Hinds got out of the inning with an infield fly to Noah Behler at first.
Prairie had another chance to score in the bottom of the second as Behler walked to lead off the inning. He was forced out at second by Carter Shears. Jake Quintal followed with a single with Shears moving to third. Prairie tried a squeeze play but Shears was put out in a rundown. Dylan Uhlenkott followed with a single but the inning then ended on a strikeout. Prairie never got another runner past second base and in only one inning the rest of the way did they put more than 1 runner on in an inning.
Meanwhile Hinds was struggling with control as 3 walks plus a couple of wild pitches led to another un in the third inning for Troy.
In the fourth Hinds gave up a leadoff double, an infield single and 2 walks and 3 more runs before coming out in favor of Levi McElroy who got out of the inning with a pair of fly ball outs.
McElroy gave up a walk and a hit batsman in the fifth but no runs. In the sixth he gave up a leadoff double and an RBI single before getting out of the inning.
Colton McElroy pitched the seventh and gave up 2 hits and hit a better which led to another run.
Prairie had just 4 hits in the game. Colton McElroy had a pair of singles while Quintal and Uhlenkott each had a single.
Hinds gave up 7 runs on just 3 hits with 7 walks and 3 strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Levi McElroy gave up 1 run on 3 hits with no walks and 1 hit batsman in 2 2/3 innings. Colton McElroy gave up 1 run on 2 hits with a hit batsman in 1 inning.

Vs. Potlatch
In the third place game against Potlatch the Pirates managed just 1 hit, a single by Owen McIntire in the third inning. That came after Potlatch pitcher Jack Clark had retired the first 8 Prairie hitters.
Prairie’s only other baserunners in the game were Quintal and Schwartz who each reached via hit by pitch.
Behler started on the mound for the Pirates and gave up a 1 out bunt single to Clark in the first inning but he was erased on a caught stealing.
Behler ran in to trouble in the second inning. He walked the leadoff hitter on 4 pitches then got a foul popup to catcher Cody Kaschmitter. A single then scored the first run of the game. Two singles followed to load the bases. A short fly ball to center was the second out. Behler then got a ground ball to third but instead of tagging the runner from second or going to the bag at third for the out, a throw was made to first that went wide for an error allowing a run to score. A 3-run double followed to give Potlatch a 0-5 lead.
Behler got through the next 3 innngs allowing just 2 baserunners but ran into trouble again in the sixth.
The first 6 hitters reached base on a hit batsman, single, single, triple, single and walk. Behler was then lifted in favor of McIntire who gave up a walk then got a strikeout. 3 straight walks led to Kaschmitter taking over on the mound. Kaschmitter wound up walking 5 more batters and gave up a single before getting out of the inning as Troy scored 13 runs.
Prairie will take a record of 11-8 into the state tournament.
