Pirates finish 3rd at State For the third straight year the Prairie Baseball team has finished 3rd at the State Tournament, which was held at Church Field in Lewiston on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 17, 18 and 19. In their opener they knocked off the South’s #1 seed, Vision Charter, 14-2. In the semifinal they lost to Clearwater Valley 3-13. In the third place game they got a measure of revenge for the big loss to Potlatch at District by winning 9-6. Vs. Vision Charter
Prairie took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against
Vision Charter of Caldwell. Colton McElroy drew a leadoff walk and
stole second. After an out, Cody Kaschmitter drew a walk. A wild pitch advanced both runners. McElroy scored on a groundout to third by Eli Hinds.
Noah Behler started on the mound for the Pirates and was on his game. He gave up a leadoff single but left the runner stranded at third. Prairie went down in order in the second inning. Behler gave up another leadoff hit in the second inning but he struck out the next batter and on the strikeout pitch, catcher Cody Kaschmitter threw out the baserunner trying to steal. Another strikeout ended the inning. Owen McIntire was hit by a pitch leading off the third inning and went to second on a sild pitch. McElroy then drew his second walk of the game. After a pair of outs, Hinds picked up 2 more RBI with a double to right center that scored both McIntire and McElroy. Vision Charter then changed pitchers and got out of the inning. Behler got two quick outs in the bottom of the third then ran into his only real trouble of the game. An error and a walk put two runners on base. The next batter hit a hard line drive but Hinds made a great catch at shortstop to end the inning. In the fourth Jake Quintal was hit by a pitch with 1 out and stole second. After a second out, McIntire doubled to left to score Quintal and make it 4-0. Behler struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth. Prairie added another run in the fifth. Hinds singled with 1 out and stole second. He went to third on a groundout. Carter Shears and Quintal were each it by a pitch to load the bases. Dylan Uhlenkott then reached on an infield hit as Hinds scored to make it 5-0. A forceout ended the inning. Behler struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth and then was pulled as he had hit the 60 pitch mark. Taking him out at 60 allowed him to come back after 1 days rest with a full pitch count. Hinds took over on the mound and struggled to throw strikes. He gave up a walk, single and 2 more walks with a run scoring. He was then taken out in favor of Levi McElroy. McElroy walked the first batter he faced to force home another run but then got out of the inning with a groundout to third. In the top of the sixth Vision Charter’s defense came undone. Colton McElroy reached on an error and stole second. Phil Schwartz laid down a sacrifice bunt but the pitcher threw the ball past first base allowing McElroy to score and Schwartz to go to second. Kaschmitter beat out an infield hit. Another error on a pickoff attempt allowed Schwartz to score. Hinds reached on an error. A balk moved Kaschmitter to third. Kaschmitter scored when Hinds reached on an error on a grounder to third. Another balk moved Hinds to second.Behler reached on an error by the shortstop with Hinds coming in to score. Shears and Quintal both walked. Behler scored on a passed ball. Prairie tried a delayed double steal with Quintal going to second but Shears was put out at the plate. Quintal went to third on a groundout by Uhlenkott and scored on a wild pitch. Levi McElroy was walked and stole second. Colton McElroy was walked and Vision Charter changed pitchers again. Schwartz was walked to load the bases and a wild pitch scored Levi McElroy. Kaschmitter was walked to reload the bases. Hinds singled to right center with Colton McElroy and Schwartz both scoring but Kaschmitter was thrown out also trying to score. That ended the inning but Prairie was now up 14-2. In the bottom of the sixth Levi McElroy gave up a 1 out walk but got out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout to short. That ended the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Despite scoring 14 runs, Prairie had just 6 hits. Hinds had half of them with a double, 2 singles and 6 RBI. McIntire had a double and an RBI. Uhlenkott had a single and an RBI. Kaschmitter had a single. Behler pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing no runs on 2 hits with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts. Hinds gave up 3 walks and a hit without getting an out. The semifinal game against C.V. was going well for the Pirates until the fourth inning.
Prairie got a pair of runners on in the top of the first as Colton McElroy was hit by a pitch and Schwartz was walked. A double play helped C.V. get out of the inning. Colton McElroy started the game on the mound and got a pair of outs before allowing a walk. After a stolen base, an error allowed the runner to score and give C.V. a 0-1 lead. Prairie again had 2 runners reach in the top of the second as Behler and Quintal each drew a walk. A passed ball moved the runners up with 2 outs but a line drive out to short ended the inning. Prairie got through the bottom of the 2nd with a runner reaching on a passed ball on a swinging strike 3. However a bunt attempt was caught by pitcher McElroy to end the inning. In the top of the third Schwartz walked with 1 out. Schwartz stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored the tying run when Kaschmitter hit a grounder to short. Kaschmitter reached when the shortstop threw the ball wide of first. He stole second and went to third on an errant pickoff throw. Hinds then hit a grounder but another error allowed Kaschmitter to score and give Prairie the lead. After a second out, Shears got Prairie’s first hit of the game on a single to right to score Hinds and make it 3-1. C.V. tied the game with a 2-out rally in the bottom of the third. A walk with 1 out was followed by a fielder’s choice with the runner forced out at second. Then came a walk and 2 singles that tied the game at 3-3. Kaden Duclos led of the fourth inning with a single to right and stole second. 3 straight outs left him stranded at second. Things came unraveled for McElroy in the bottom of the fourth. He got two outs but an error, hit batsman and 3 walks led to him being relieved by his younger brother Levi McElroy. Levi wasn’t as sharp as the day before as he gave up a walk and 2 singles before getting out of the inning with a fly ball out. C.V. scored 7 runs in the inning to take a 3-10 lead. Kaschmitter walked to lead off the fifth and stole second. He was put out trying to advance to third. 2 strikeouts ended the inning. C.V. needed 3 runs to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth. Levi McElroy hit the lead off batter then gave up a single for 1 run. After an out, he again hit a batter. The next batter hit a triple to right field to score a second run. When the throw in got away at third base, the batter wound up scoring the game-ending run. Prairie had just 2 hits in the game, a single each by Shears and Duclos. Colton McElroy pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed 8 runs on 2 hits with 6 walks, 1 hit batsman and 4 strikeouts. Prairie took a lead in the first inning against
Potlatch without benefit of a hit. Colton McElroy was hit by the first
pitch of the game. A groundout moved him to second. Kaschmitter reached
on an error with McElroy going to third. Hinds hit a ground ball and
McElroy was put out at the plate on the fielder’s choice with
Kaschmitter going to third. Behler reached on a passed ball third
strike with Kaschmitter scoring on the play to give Prairie a 1-0 lead.
Behler was back on the mound for the Pirates and gave up a leadoff single. A sacrifice moved the runner to second. The runner scored on an error to tie the game. Prairie put two runners on base in the second with Quintal singling up the middle and McIntire getting hit by a pitch but both were left on base. Potlatch took the lead in the bottom of the second on an error, single, 2 walks and a bases loaded triple as they took a 1-5 lead. Prairie answered back with a pair of runs in the third. Kaschmitter hit a 1-out single to left and stole second. Hinds doubled to left to score Kaschmitter. A single by Behler moved Hinds to third. Hinds then scored on a delayed double steal as Uhlenkott, who was courtesy running for Behler, took off for second trying to draw a throw and when he did, Hinds scored from third. Behler gave up another un in the bottom of the inning on 2 singles and a groundout as Potlatch took a 3-6 lead. Prairie went down in order in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth Behler gave up a lead off walk. Kaschmitter then threw out the runner trying to steal. A 2-out double went for naught as Behler recorded a strikeout to end the inning. Prairie got a run back in the fifth as Kaschmitter hit a 1-out single to right and Hinds followed with a single to left. Behler hit a ball to second that forced Hinds but Kaschmitter was able to score when the attempted double play throw to first got away allowing Behler to go to second. Behler walked 2 batters in the bottom of the fifth but got out of the inning with an unusual strike ‘em out throw ‘em out double play. On the pitch, which turned out to be a third strike, the runner on second tried to steal third. The throw got away but was backed up by Hinds who threw to the plate. Kaschmitter wasn’t able to handle the throw but Behler came in from the mound to back up the play and grabbed the ball and dove to tag out the runner. In the top of the sixth Prairie put a rally together. Quintal led off with a single. Duclos sacrificed him to second. McIntire then single to left to score Quintal. a wild pitch moved McIntire to second and he scored on a single up the middle by Colton McElroy that tied the game at 6-6. McElroy stole second and went to third on a groundout by Schwartz. Kaschmitter then picked up his third hit of the game, scoring McElroy to give the Pirates the lead. Kaschmitter stole second and scored on Hinds’ double to the wall in center to make it 8-6. Behler hit a batter and with 1 out in the bottom of the sixth but got out of the inning with a comebacker. In the top of the 7th the Pirates added an insurance run. With 2 outs, Duclos was hit by a pitch. McIntire followed with a single and Uhlenkott was sent in as a pinchrunner. A wild pitch scored Duclos and Uhlenkott wound up going all the way to third on the play. That made it 9-6. In the bottom of the 7th, Behler was getting close to the 110 pitch limit. He got a pair of strikeouts to max him out. McIntire was then called on to pitch and he was able to end the game with a swinging strike on a 1-2 pitch. Prairie had 12 hits in the game led by Hinds who had 2 doubles and a single and 2 RBI. Kaschmitter had 3 singles and 2 RBI. McIntire had 2 singles and an RBI. Quintal had 2 singles. Colton McElroy and Behler each had a single. Behler pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits with 5 walks and 9 strikeouts. McIntire pitched to 1 batter, striking him out to get the save. In the past two years at state Behler was the starter and winning pitcher in all 4 of the Pirates wins.
