On the weekend of July 28-30
there was a University of Idaho Vandal Basketball reunion in Moscow,
Idaho to celebrate the teams of the early 80s, which included the 1982
Sweet Sixteen team.
Friday
night’s meet and greet in the Fairfield Inn conference room gave the
former teammates a chance to reconnect after 40+ years. The room was
decorated with a variety of Vandal swag. Old uniforms, warmup suits and
Converse basketball shoes were also on display to bring back thehoop
memories. Several scrapbooks were spread around to browse through. The
evening also included a 35 minute video highlight show. The guys were
excited to watch the video and cheered for every fast break, blocked
shot and allyoop dunk shot. Just like after the games 40 years ago,
pizza and beverages were provided for the players and coaches.
Saturday
started off with a U of I campus tour in the Vandal Trolly. The tour
consisted of stops at the student rec center, the bookstore, Memorial
Gym and the new ICCU Arena. Loose basketballs at the ICCU Arena
practice gym allowed several of the former players to attempt to prove
they could still shoot the 3 point shot. We’ll just say that success
was very limited.
Early
Saturday afternoon the Vandal trolly dropped the players off at the
famous Corner Club in downtown Moscow. Memories abounded as the players
viewed all the old newspaper clipping on the walls of the
establishment. The Corner Club was very gracious in hosting us for the
afternoon.
The
activities for Saturday culminated with a catered dinner at the Kibbie
Dome in the open-air Litehouse Suite that overlooks the football field.
A delicious dinner was provided and a slide show was shown on the jumbo
screen above the football field. The evening also included a birthday
cake for Coach Monson as he turned 90 this past April.
Each
player was given the opportunity to speak at the dinner. Many players
thanked the coaches and teammates for all the success these teams
achieved and how much those teams meant to them.Pete Prigge shared how
great it is to live in North Central Idaho and how nice it is to be
reminded occasionally by Vandal fans from that era how much they
enjoyed the games during that successful season. Pete told the former
players that they are probably all more “famous” than they realize, and
that people are frequently asking Pete about them.
Many thanks go out to Matt Haskins, The Fairfield Inn, the U of I Alumni Association and the Vandal Athletics Department. With their assistance this reunion
weekend turned out to be an awesome event and will be remembered for a
long time. Go Vandals! Photo submitted by Leah Prigge. Click on the
