Living History - Mrs. Ferdinand Goebel
Beth Forsmann played the role of Mrs. Ferdinand Goebel at the Raspberry Social held at the Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude on August 6.
At the time of the Social, we were unsure of her first name, so Beth introduced herself as Mrs. Ferdinand Goebel.  Fortunately, Janice Bruegeman came through with the missing information about her “Granny Goebel,” adding that she went by Regina.
Janice called her father, Phil Bruegeman, to confirm this fact; he said his mother’s first name really was Maria. She’d been widowed after having a child with her first husband, later marrying Ferdinand Goebel.
Here was Beth's narrative after that conversation:
“My name is Maria Regina Goebel. My husband Ferdinand and I owned a cabin three miles from St. Gertrude’s, near St. Michael’s Monastery. We allowed immigrants who wanted to settle in Cottonwood to stay there free, for as long as they needed, to get on their feet.  We had dozens of families come through, including the J.B. Forsmanns, the Henry Kuther family, the Boglis, Romains, and Kopczynskis.”
