Pirates lose at Kamiah
Despite 166 yards rushing from Dylan Uhlenkott, the Prairie Pirates fell 14-50 at Kamiah Friday, Sept. 29. Dylan Uhlenkott found some open field and went 47 yards for Prairie’s first touchdown at Kamiah last Friday evening.
Uhlenkott, back after missing a couple of games due to injury, scored Prairie’s first touchdown and set up the other but both came after the Pirates trailed by 42 points.
Kamiah received the opening kickoff, recovering an onside attempt at the Prairie 49, and needed just 5 plays to score. Quarterback David Kludt scored from 30 yards out on a keeper. He then pass for the 2-pointer to make it 0-8.
Prairie recovered a short Kamiah kickoff at their own 40. Uhlenkott picked up a couple of first downs with runs of 10 and 11 yards before the drive stalled at the Kamiah 34.
Kamiah picked up a first down then the Pirate defense forced them to turn the ball back to the Pirates, stopping a fourth down run about a foot short at the Prairie 46.
Prairie faced a fourth and 2 at the Kamiah 46, but false started making it a fourth and 7. Noah Behler was sacked for a 13 yard loss on the fourth down pass attempt.
Kamiah took over at the Prairie 36 and scored their second touchdown 7 plays later on a 1 yard pass from Kludt to Lawson Landmark.
Prairie’s next possession ended in an interception and Kamiah scored again to take a 0-24 lead with Connor Weddle scoring from 9 yards out.
Prairie started their next possession at their own 25. A 32 yard pass from Behler to Blake Bunce moved the Pirates to the Kamiah 48.
Prairie moved down to the Kamiah 30 where a fumbled snap from center gave  Kamiah the ball.
The Kubs picked up 61 yards on a pair of passes but then the Pirate defense stiffened. Chris Schumacher tackled Everett Oatman for a 10 yard loss. Matt Wemhoff then tackled Kludt for a 3 yard loss. Kamiah then passed for an apparent 22 yard touchdown but a holding penalty called it back. Kludt picked up 12 yards to set up a fourth and goal from the 20 but Wemhoff broke through and sacked Kludt for a 4 yard loss as Prairie took over at their own 24.
Prairie faced a fourth and 12 from the 22 when a halfback pass attempt was intercepted by Kludt who returned the ball to the Prairie. 2 plays later Kamiah scored about on a pass from Ludt to Gavin Schoening. The 2-point try was stopped short as Kamiah now led 0-30 just before halftime.
The second half didn’t start any better as Prairie received the second half kickoff but fumbled the ball away at their own 40. Kamiah scored in 4 plays to make it 0-36.
Prairie’s next possession ended in a punt with Kamiah taking over at the Prairie 46.
The Kubs scored again on a 7 play drive that ended in another touchdown pass by Kludt. That made the score 0-42 and the rest of the game was played with a running clock.
Prairie started their next possession on their own 20. A 24 yard run by Uhlenkott on third and 4 moved the ball to the 50. A 3 yard run by Behler set up second and 7 from the Kamiah 47. Uhlenkott took the handoff and went over the left side and burst into open grass and went 47 yards for Prairie’s first touchdown of the game on the second play of the fourth quarter. The 2-point pass failed making the score 6-42.
Kamiah answered back with another touchdown on a 9 play, 69 yard drive that ended with a 6 yard touchdown pass by Kludt. Kludt ran in the 2-pointer to make it 6-50.
Prairie took over at their own 40. Behler converted a third and 2 with a 12 yard run to the Kamiah 40. Uhlenkott then picked up 15 yards on a run to the left. After an incomplete pass, Uhlenkott took a run up the middle and bounced it to the left side for 24 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the 1.
Behler scored on a quarterback sneak on the next play. Behler then passed to Uhlenkott for the 2-point conversion to make it 14-50 with 1:14 left to play.
Prairie’s onside kick try was recovered by the Kubs and they were able to run out the clock.
Uhlenkott had 166 yards rushing on 20 attempts. The rest of the Prairie runners totaled just 10 yards on 17 carries.
Behler was 3 for 10 passing with 1 interception for 33 yards. Uhlenkott was 0 for 1 with an interception. Bunce caught 1 pass for 32 yards. Bennie Elven caught 1 for 2 yards and Uhlenkott caught 1 for -1 yard.
The Kubs totaled 194 yards rushing on 39 attempts with Kludt picking up 73 yards on 11 carries to lead the team.
Kludt was 12 for 16 passing for 147 yards. 8 of those completions went to Tug Loughran for 117 yards.
The Pirates fall to 3-2 on the season and 2-2 in league play. They will play Lapwai this Friday, Oct. 6 at Cottonwood at 7 p.m.
