Welcome to October! We celebrate National Newspaper Week October 8 – 14. We can be sure that civilization would not be what it is without newspapers in general. And “Cheers” to our local newspaper, the Cottonwood Chronicle, for its part in our special and unique culture. October 9 is Indigenous Peoples’ Day and we salute their contributions to our way of life every day. October 9 is also Columbus Day in honor of Christopher Columbus who was too busy finding his way across the Atlantic Ocean to realize that the world could be home to other people just as clever as the adventurous Europeans. Indigenous People and Columbus make a special tribute to Global Diversity Awareness Month. October 11 is Myths and Legends Day giving all of us another excuse to visit the Library to check out some interesting books about Myths and maybe Legends, too! We are still celebrating Family History Month and wouldn’t it be fun to write down those legends and myths of our own families. October is still National Book Month and National Reading Group Month so it’s a good time to read a book with a group. Maybe you just want to read a certain book and we don’t have it in the Library. Someone suggested a “Buy, Read and Donate Campaign” for those who want to read a book we don’t have, want to buy it to read it and want to donate it to our Library to share with others in the community. Here is a last little tidbit: “A library’s basic functions include the promotion of education, the dissemination of information and the promotion of culture.” |
