Pirates lose at Logos
PIRATES BOYS FOOTBALL SCHEDULE FOR 2023
The Prairie football team’s season came to an end with a 40-66 loss to undefeated Logos at Moscow Friday, Oct. 20. For the second straight season the Pirates will miss out on the state playoffs as the first team out. Automatic conference qualifiers accounted for 9 of the 12 playoff spots with Prairie being the fourth ranked team among at-larger qualifiers with only 3 making it in. Prairie wound up ranked higher in the MaxPreps rankings, used to determine at-large qualifiers, than either of the District 3 automatic qualifiers. They were edged out by Carey, which has a 3-5 season record compared to Prairie’s 5-3. MaxPreps puts a lot of weight on strength of schedule. Prairie received the opening kickoff and Trenton Lorentz, available for the first time since the season opener against Troy, carried the ball 7 times on the opening 12 play scoring drive. Lorentz gain 28 yards on those 7 carries. The only pass in the drive was a 23 yard gain from Noah Behler to Bennie Elven that set up first and goal at the 10. Behler wound up going in from the 3 for the touchdown. Behler passed to Elven for the 2-ponter to give Prairie an 8-0 lead. Logos took over at their own 36 after the kickoff. Two offside penalties against Prairie moved the ball to the 46. On Logos’ first play, quarterback Jack Driskill passed to Ben Carlson for a 54 yard touchdown. They ran in the 2-pointer to tie the game at 8-8. Prairie came up short on fourth and 5 on their next possession and turned the ball over to Logos at the Logos 49. Logos moved down to the 5 for a first and goal. Matt Wemhoff sacked Driskill for an 8 yard loss on the next play, his second sack of the possession. Logos completed a pass to moved down to the 1. Prairie then stopped Jonathan Morrill for a 1 yard loss with Lorentz and Elven combining on the tackle. On fourth and goal from the 2, Dylan Uhlenkott tackled Driskill for a 1 yard loss as Prairie took over on downs at their own 2. Prairie was unable to move the ball and a fumble on fourth down gave Logos the ball back at the Prairie 9. They were able to overcome a holding penalty as Driskill ran the ball in from the 13 to give Logos the lead. Driskill passed to Morrill for the 2-pointer to make it 8-16. Wemhoff recovered an onside kick attempt at the Prairie 43. Behler ran for 22 yards then Lorentz picked up 14 to moved the ball to the Logos 19. Lorentz picked up another 3 to setup second and 7 at the 16. Behler then passed to Elven for the touchdown. Behler then passed to Lorentz for the 2-pointer to tie the score at 16-16. Logos recovered Prairie’s onside kick attempt at the Prairie 45. Driskill was stopped for a 1 yard loss by Elven and Levi McElroy but then passed for 45 yards to set up first and goal at the 1. Morrill was stopped for a 3 yard loss and Logos eventually faced fourth and goal at the 2. Driskill passed to Lucius Comis for the touchdown and then passed for the 2-pointer to put Logos back on top. Prairie took over at their own 20 after a touchback on the kickoff. Lorentz made a great catch for a 20 yard gain down the right side as he had to reach around the defender to catch the ball. Unfortunately, 2 plays later, Behler threw too high to Lorentz and the pass was intercepted by Logos at the Logos 45. Five straight pass plays saw Logos stretch their lead to 16 with another touchdown and 2-point conversion with just 21 seconds left in the half. Logos received the second half kickoff and moved downfield for another touchdown. This time the 2-point try failed but the Knights still led 16-38. Another fumble on fourth down gave Logos the ball back at the Prairie 30 and the Knights needed just 2 plays to add another touchdown. With the 2-point conversion the Knights now led 16-46. Prairie gave the ball back on downs and Logos added another touchdown to go up 16-52 with 2:25 left in the third quarter. The Pirates got back on the scoreboard in their next possession with a 9 play, 65 yard scoring drive. A 30 yard pass to Elven moved the ball into Logos territory at the 35. 24 yards on 3 carries by Lorentz helped move the ball down to the 15. On third and 5 at the 10, Behler found Levi Gehring open on the right side for a touchdown. Behler ran in the 2-pointer to cut the deficit to 24-52. Logos answered right back with a 2-play, 60 yard scoring drive. Prairie stopped the 2-point run but Logos now led 24-58. On Prairie’s next possession a 33 yard pass to Lorentz moved the Pirates to the Logos 35. 2 plays later Behler carried the ball for 25 yards but fumbled at the end with Elven recovering at the 9 for first and goal. Lorentz carried the ball into the end zone on the next play. Behler scored the 2-point er to make it 32-58. Elven appeared to recover an onside kick attempt but the referees gave the ball to Logos at the 50 as the ball didn’t hit the ground first before the recovery. Logos needed 5 plays to added another touchdown. With the 2-pointer it was now 32-66 with 4:29 to play. Prairie answered right back as Behler connected with Lorentz for a 70 yard touchdown on the first play after the kickoff. Behler ran in the 2-pointer to make it 40-66. Prairie tried another onside kick but Logos recovered at the 50. The Knights moved down to the Prairie 5 but wound up turning the ball over on downs. Prairie tried 4 pass plays but the only completion was for 0 yards as time ran out. Prairie had 148 yards rushing on 40 attempts led by Lorentz who had 84 yards on 22 carries. Behler added 61 yards on 10 carries. Behler competed 9 of 16 passes with 1 interception for 203 yards. Lorentz caught 4 passes for 124 yards. Elven caught 4 for 69 and Gehring caught 1 for 10. Logos had 118 yards rushing on 25 attempts led by Driskill who had 89 yards on 16 attempts. Driskill completed 20 of 28 passes for 364 yards.
