To the Library and Beyond
Diving into November we can’t forget to set our clocks and watches back to Standard Time on Sunday, November 5.  Monday 6 November is National Non-Fiction Day, making it the perfect day to fact-check your position on the issues for the next day.  Because, as we all know, Tuesday 7 November is Election Day – and three cheers for all voters who perform their civic obligation.  We’ll wrap-up the week on Saturday 11 November with Veterans Day.
We continue celebrating:  National Family Literacy Month as “an opportunity for families to learn and read together”; National Scholarship Month to “raise awareness of scholarship opportunities for current and future college students”; and Native American Heritage Month for “rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people.”
The National Center on Charitable Statistics seems to confirm the belief that nearly one-third of all nonprofit organizations fail within ten years of inception and the all-knowing Forbes statisticians tell us that “over half” of chartered nonprofits fail or stall within a few years.  There are also those notorious organizations that appear to violate nonprofit “rules.”  Despite these odds, Prairie Community Library, Inc. has been chartered for more than 30 years and has been organized well enough to withstand the bumps and potholes along the way.  This seems a shining example of the serious passion for books enjoyed by people of these surrounding communities.  We are very grateful to our patrons and supporters who have made Prairie Community Library the haven of resources it is today.
