City of Cottonwood to run bond election on Tuesday The City of Cottonwood is running a bond election on November 7. The bond election authorizes the Council to utilize loan funds needed to access grants offered from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. A successful bond election will: * Allow the City to comply with Clean Water Act Standards * Allow full access to $23.1 Million in grants offered by Idaho DEQ * Show community support to pursue other funding & grant opportunities The project, estimated at $27.6 Million, will eliminate current discharge to Cottonwood Creek and construct facilities to store and reuse wastewater over the growing season. The State requires compliance by 2028 to avoid maximum penalties of $5,000 per violation per day. The City is actively pursuing additional funding sources to minimize rate impacts and a phased rate increase is planned over the next 3-5 years. Since the bond will be paid solely from wastewater revenue, there will be no tax authorized on any taxable assessed value. The actual amount financed would be subject to decision by Council not to exceed the $5 Million maximum. Polls will be open next Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Timeline for the project. A sample ballot for next Tuesday's election. |
