Lady Pirates win 1 of 2 At C.V. The Pirates first road
game of the season was against a short-handed, overmatched C.V. squad
coached by Prairie alum Sky Wilson. The Rams were only able to suit up 5 players for the game and had just 6 on their roster.Prairie played full-court pressure off the bat and raced out to a 16-0 lead in the first 2 minutes before coach Lori Mader took the press off. Prairie went on to build a 28-0 lead before the Rams final got on the board with a basket at the 23 second mark of the first quarter. They added a free throw to make it 28-3 at the quarter break. Lexi Schumacher scored 8 of Prairie’s first 18 points with Sage Elven and Kylie Schumacher adding 4 each before Prairie subbed in 5 new players at the 5 minute mark. Ellie Nuxoll scored 5 and Sydney Shears 3 in the final 5 minutes of the opening quarter. Prairie then sent the starters back onto the court to start the second quarter and scored the first 15 points before C.V.’s Jayleigh Wellard sank a 3-pointer. Prairie then finished the half with a 15-0 run to make it 57-6 at the half. Lexi Schumacher added 15 second quarter points, mostly on transition lay-ups off C.V. turnovers. Prairie backed off in the second half mostly working the ball around up offense and setting up in a zone on defense rather than pressing or running their halfcourt trap. Kylie Schumacher scored 6 and Lexi Schumacher 4 in the third quarter as Prairie outscored C.V. 14-6. C.V. got a pair of 3’s from Wellard. Aubree Rehder scored 4 to lead the Pirates in the fourth quarter as they outscored C.V. 12-4 under a running clock. Lexi Schumacher wound up with 29 points to lead Prairie in scoring. Elven and Kylie Schumacher added 12 each. Shears scored 7. Nuxoll scored 5. Hailey Hanson, Rehder and Avery Riener scored 4 each. Alli Geis, Nadia Cash and Halee Rowland scored 2 each. Rehder and Shears had 5 rebounds each to lead Prairie to a 29-11 edge on the boards. Lexi Schumacher had 8 steals while Hanson had 7 and Kylie Schumacher had 6 as Prairie forced 40 turnovers. Hanson and Geis each had 4 assists. Prairie was 40 for 62 from the field, 65%, and 3 for 9 at the line, 33 %. C.V. was 5 for 23 from the field, 22%, and 3 for 7 at the line, 43%. At Grangeville It was a considerably tougher game at Grangeville in the opening matchup of the Idaho County Shootout.Prairie opened the scoring when Elven scored off a feed from Kylie Schumacher. Grangeville tied it then Prairie took back the lead when Hanson hit a 3-pointer. Grangeville came back with 5 straight points as Prairie cooled off considerably from the field as they went 0 for the rest of the quarter from the field and when they weren’t missing shots, they were committing turnovers. Grangeville wound up going on a 1-10 run with a free throw by Kylie Schumacher as Prairie’s only point in a 4 minute stretch. Prairie made 3 of 8 free throws in the final 2:30 of the quarter as they trailed 9-14 at the quarter break. Grangeville’s Caryss Barger scored 4 straight points to open the second quarter. Lexi Schumacher then broke Prairie’s shooting drought by banking in a long 3-pointer at the 5:06 mark. She added a lay-up following a steal by Elven then Hanson hit another 3 to cut the deficit to 1 at 17-18 with 4:18 left in the half. However Grangeville closed the half with a 4-11 run as Prairie got a basket each by Elven and Lexi Schumacher as the Bulldogs took a 21-29 lead at the half. Prairie was unable to make up any ground I the third quarter as turnovers killed any momentum they were able to build. Grangeville led by as many as 14 at 27-41 before Elven and Lexi Schumacher scored a pair of baskets late in the quarter to cut the deficit to 10 at 31-41 after 3 quarters. Grangeville opened the fourth quarter with a 0-10 run to push their lead to 20 at 31-51. Prairie then answered with a 16-3 run to get back within 7 at 47-54. Kylie Schumacher scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in that stretch hitting 4 of 5 shots and 2 of 2 free throws. Elven, Lexi Schumacher and Shears each added a basket. Grangeville then put together a 2-8 run to push their lead back to 15 at 47-62 with 28 seconds to play. Kylie Schumacher closed out the scoring with 2 free throws in the final seconds. Kylie Schumacher had a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Lexi Schumacher added 15 points with Elven also in double figures with 10. Hanson scored 6 and Geis and Shears each scored 2 points. Prairie had a 43-33 rebounding edge. Geis was also in double figures on the boards with 10. Geis and Lexi Schumacher each had 2 steals and Lexi Schumacher had 7 assists while Elven had 4. Prairie was 20 for 49 from the field, 41%, and 8 for 17 at the line, 47%. Grangeville was 27 for 66 from the field, 41%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%. The biggest difference in Grangeville’s favor was turnovers as Prairie had 38 turnovers while Grangeville had 22. Prairie is now 2-0 in league play and 4-2 overall. The JV team won their game against Grangeville on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Cottonwood, 38-35.
