10 turn out for Patriots girls basketball There are 10 girls turned out for the St. John Bosco Lady Patriots basketball team this year. Vivian Dahlsrud is the only senior on the squad. Juniors include returning players Sarah Waters, Rachel Sonnen, Julia Wassmuth, Noelle Chmelik and Raylie Warren. They all started most of the time last season. Savannah Perrin is the only sophomore with freshmen Catherine Seubert, Audry Warren and Miah Mager also on the team. Alyssa Frei returns as head coach with Mandy Crea, Susan Wassmuth and Gene Weckman as assistant coaches. 7 turn out for Patriots boys basketball There are 7 players turned out for the St. John Bosco boys basketball team this year. They are led by 3 seniors, Noah Beckman, Stallone Hoene and Levi Wassmuth. Levi Wassmuth is the only returning player who saw a lot of playing time last season. There are no juniors on the team but there are two sophomores, Conner Nuxoll and Tommy Rose, who saw mostly JV playing time last season. Rounding out the squad are freshmen Cody Weckman and Nathan Wassmuth. Alex Frei returns as head coach with Kim Frei and Lane Wassmuth as assistants. Patriot boys and girls both start 1-1 St. John Bosco got their high school basketball seasons underway with a pair of boy/girl doubleheaders. On Thursday, Nov. 30, both traveled to Moscow where the boys played Logos Online and won 56-14, while the girls play Logos and won 26-19. On Monday, Dec. 4, they traveled to Riggins to take on Salmon River where the girls lost 32-35 and the boys lost 38-61. Girls at Logos St. John Bosco never trailed against Logos but couldn’t ever put them away either.The Patriots jumped out to a an 8-0 lead as Julia Wassmuth opened the scoring with a basket a minute into the game. It was 3:30 later before Sarah Waters scored the second basket of the game. Catherine Seubert then scored a pair of baskets to make it 8-0. Logos finally scored with 1:17 left in the first quarter and Bosco answered with Audry Warren stealing the ball and scoring to make it 10-2. Logos answered to make it 10-4 as the first quarter ended. Bosco scored the first 4 points of the second quarter as Vivian Dahlsrud scored a putback and Wassmuth stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to make it 14-4 with 5:44 left in the half. Bosco then went into a dry spell of over 5 minutes but Logos was only able to score 4 points to close within 14-8. With 36 seconds left in the half Rachel Sonnen scored to make it 16-8. That was also the halftime score. Logos opened the second half scoring with a basket but Wassmuth and Waters each scored to put Bosco up by 10 again at 20-10. A basket by Logos was answered with a basket by Noelle Chmelik. Logos scored again to make it 22-14 at the end of the third quarter. A basket by Logos to open the fourth quarter cut the Bosco lead to 6. Chmelik scored a putback with 5:18 left and Raylie Warren scored at the 2:18 mark to put Bosco back up by 10 at 26-16. That would be all the scoring for the Patriots as Logos scored a free throw and then a basket in the final 40 seconds to make the final margin 7 points. Wassmuth led the Patriots in scoring with 6 points. Chmelik, Waters and Seubert each scored 4 and Sonnen, Dahlsrud, Raylie Warren and Audry Warren each scored 4. Bosco had a slight edge on the boards of 40-37. Raylie Warren led the Patriots with 11 rebounds with Wassmuth and Waters adding 8 each. Waters had 5 steals and Waters had 4 assists. The Patriots were 13 for 46 from the field, 28%, and 0 for 4 at the line. Logos was 9 for 49 from the field, 18%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. full game wasn’t available.Girls at Salmon River The Lady Patriots led at
the end of the first quarter but a 0-10 run by Salmon River to start
the second quarter put the Savages ahead and they were able to
withstand a late rally.Salmon River scored first by converting all 3 free throws of a foul on a 3-point shooter. Bosco came back with a basket each by Dahlsrud and Wassmuth to take their first lead. A 3-pointer by Salmon River put them back ahead. After a free throw by Seubert, Salmon River scored again for a 5-8 lead. A 3 by Wassmuth tied the game and then a putback by Raylie Warren gave Bosco a 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Salmon River dominated the second quarter as they opened with a 0-10 run before Raylie Warren made 2 free throws at the 3:46 mark to make it 12-18. A Salmon River basket was followed by a putback by Chmelik to end the half with Bosco trailing 14-20. The Patriots trailed by as many as 9 twice in the third quarter, including the end of the quarter as they railed 20-29 after 3. Chmelik had 3 points in the quarter while Audrey Warren scored 2 and Raylie Warren 1. Salmon led twice by 11 in the fourth quarter at 20-31 and 22-33. Bosco then mounted a comeback. Wassmuth took over on offense scoring a pair of baskets to cut the deficit to 7 at 26-33. After a Salmon River basket, Wassmuth scored 3 more baskets to pull the Patriots within 3 with 1:25 to play. Bosco had their chances in the final minute but couldn’t score again. They missed 4 free throws in the final 22 seconds and forced several turnovers but just couldn’t convert at the score didn’t change for either side in the final 1:25. Wassmuth led the Patriots in scoring with 15 points. Raylie Warren scored 7. Chmelik scored 5. Dahlsrud and Audrey Warren scored 2 each and Seubert scored 1. Bosco had a 37-29 edge on the boards with Dahlsrud collecting 10 rebounds and Raylie Warren 8. Wassmuth had 7 steals and Chmelik had 3 assists. early and Salmon River gradually pulled away as the game went on. The
Savages opened the game with a 3-pointer. Bosco counter with a lay-up
by Levi Wassmuth. After a Salmon River basket, Cody Weckman stole the
ball and scored to make it 4-5. Salmon River then went on a 0-8 run to take a 4-13 lead. Bosco closed the quarter with a basket each by Connor Nuxoll and Tommy Rose to cut the deficit to 8-13. Salmon River scored the first 4 points of the second quarter for a 9-point lead. They eventually led by as many as 13 after a 3-pointer made it 13-26. Bosco closed the half with a 5-0 run to get back within 8 at 18-26. Weckman sank a free throw, Levi Wassmuth scored a putback and Weckman drove for a lay-up to finish the half. Bosco was down 20-30 in the third quarter when they started a rally. Levi Wassmuth scored 6 and Stallone Hoene 2 in an 8-2 run by the Patriots that cut the deficit to 4 at 28-32. However, Salmon River then closed out the quarter with a7 straight points, all on free throws, to take a 28-39 lead into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter saw Levi Wassmuth trying to keep the Patriots in the game with 7 of their 9 points before fouling out. The rest of the team though went ice-cold as they hit just 1 of 13 shots from the field. The final margin of 23 points was Bosco’s biggest deficit of the game as Salmon River both made shots and free throws and rebounded most of Bosco’s missed shots. Wassmuth wound up with 18 points to lead the Patriots in scoring. Weckman scored 9. Hoene scored 4 and Noah Beckman, Nuxoll and Rose scored 2 each. Salmon River had a 42-47 edge on the boards, 9-13 in the fourth quarter. Wassmuth led the Patriots with 17 rebounds while Beckman had 10. Weckman had 4 steals and Beckman had 3 assists.
