Pirates lose to Potlatch
The Prairie Pirates lost their fourth straight game Friday, Dec. 15, to Potlatch, 22-50, at Cottonwood. Briggs Rambo drives toward the hoop against Potlatch.
Prairie got a chance to score before the game actually started when Potlatch’s Jaxon Vowels was assessed a technical foul for dunking the ball during warmups. However Lee Forsmann missed both free throws. Prairie then got the ball to start the game, also due to the technical. Vowels fouled Forsmann with Lee making 1 of 2 free throws to give Prairie a 1-0 lead.
After a Potlatch basket, Riley Shears drove to the hoop for a lay-up to give Prairie a 3-2 lead with 6 minutes left in the first quarter. That lead lasted 30 seconds and was the last lead the Pirates would have.
Potlatch finished the first quarter with a 0-9 run and opened the second quarter with another 5 straight to take a 3-16 lead.
Forsmann finally broke the run with a 3-pointer. After a Potlatch basket, Forsmann added 2 free throws. After another Potlatch score, Shears sank a 3-pointer as Prairie trailed 11-20 with 2:36 left in the half.
Logan Weber scored with 21 seconds left to make it 13-24 at the half.
Prairie continued to struggle on offense in the second half. Potlatch scored the first 3 points of the half then Matt Wemhoff connected on a 3-pointer and Noah Behler scored to get the deficit under 10 at 18-27. Potlatch then outscored Prairie 2-9 the rest of the quarter. Briggs Rambo had Prairie’s only points in that stretch.
Prairie was outscored 2-14 in the fourth quarter with Trenton Lorentz scoring Prairie’s only basket.
Forsmann wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with just 6 points. Shears scored 5. Wemhoff scored 3 and Lorentz, Behler, Rambo and Weber scored 2 each.
Potlatch had a 29-32 edge on the boards. Forsmann had 6 to lead the Pirates with Lorentz adding 5 rebounds.
Wemhoff had 3 steals and Forsmann had 2 assists.
Prairie was 13 for 39 from the field, 33%, and 3 for 12 at the line, 25%. Potlatch was 21 for 47 from the field, 45%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%.
Prairie is now 1-4 on the season and 0-4 in league play.
The JV team won their game 51-26.
Potlatch dominated the first quarter as Prairie was outscored 5-14. However Prairie dominated the rest of the game.
Max Rehder and Levi Gehring each scored 2 in the first quarter and Collin Rae added 1.
In the second quarter Prairie turned things around as they scored the first 17 points of the period and outscored the Loggers 26-2 to take a 31-16 halftime lead.
Phil Schwartz started things off with a 3-points and Gehring scored when he stole an inbound pass under the Prairie basket and scored. Chase VonBargen hit a 3. Ben Secrest scored back-to-back baskets and Rehder closed out the 17-0 run with a 3-pointer.
After Potlatch broke the scoring run, Prairie closed out the half with a 9-0 run. Schwartz hit another 3 to start it off. Nate Forsmann and Gehring each scored a putback and Gehring added 2 free throws to end the half.
Prairie then scored the first 4 points of the second half as Jackson Enneking and Secrest each scored a basket. Potlatch outscored the Pirates 6-4 the rest of the quarter as Prairie took a 41-20 lead into the fourth quarter. Enneking, Kaicon Downing and Rehder each scored a basket in that quarter ending run.
The Pirates scored the first 9 points of the fourth to invoke the running clock rule with 3:25 to play. Rae scored after making a steal. Secrest scored a lay-up. Kade Quintal hit a 3 pointer and Schumacher scored a putback to make it 50-20.
Potlatch outscored Prairie 1-6 the rest of the way with Schumacher scoring a free throw for Prairie’s only point.
Secrest and Gehring scored 8 points each to lead the JVs in scoring with Rehder scoring 7. Schwartz scored 6 with Schumacher scoring 5. Enneking scored 4. VonBargen, Rae and Quintal scored 3 each and Downing and Forsmann scored 2 each.
Prairie outrebounded the Loggers 41-30 with Schumacher grabbing 6 to lead the team. Enneking, Secrest and Rae had 5 each.
Gehring had 5 steals and 3 assists while Schumacher and Forsmann had 3 steals each.
The JVs were 20 for 54 from the field, 37%, and 6 for 14 at the line, 43%. Potlatch was 12 for 40 from the field, 30%, and 2 for 11 at the line, 18%.
