Patriots girls split, boys lose twice
The St. John Bosco girls basketball team was 1-1 last week while the boys were 0-2. The girls beat Highland 32-26 at Craigmont on Thursday, Dec. 14 while the boys lost 40-64. On Friday the two team traveled to Deary where the girls lost 25-44 and the boys lost 40-74.
Girls vs, Highland
The Lady Patriots led 5-1 at the end of the first quarter as Raylie Warren and Julia Wassmuth each scored a basket and Sarah Waters added a free throw.
They then scored the first 5 points of the second quarter for a 10-1 lead as Waters added another free throw and Miah Mager and Wassmuth each scored a basket.
Highland scored a second free throw then Wassmuth scored again for a 12-2 lead. Highland finally got their first basket on a 3-pointer and managed to outscored the Patriots 2-7 to end the half. A driving lay-up by Wassmuth was Bosco’s points in that run. Bosco led 14-9 at the half.
Highland came out in the third quarter and outscored Bosco 2-11 with Noelle Chmelik scoring the Patriots only points in that run. That gave Highland their first lead of the game at 16-20. Wassmuth and Rachel Sonnen each scored a basket to tie the score at 20-20 as the third quarter ended.
A free throw by Waters put Bosco back on top to open the fourth quarter but the Huskies took back the lead with a basket.
A shot from the elbow by Waters put Bosco back on top for good and kicked off a 9-0 run. Waters again hit from midrange and Warren followed with a putback. Waters stole the ball and scored and Warren added a free throw. Wassmuth closed out the run with a full court drive for a lay-up to make it 30-22.
Highland scored 2 free throws and a basket to pull back within 4 at 30-26 but Waters added 2 free throws late to make the final margin 6 points.
Wassmuth scored 12 to lead the Patriots with Waters adding 9. Warren scored 5 and Chmelik, Mager and Sonnen each scored 2.
Bosco had a 56-36 advantage on the boards led by Warren and Waters with 13 rebounds each.
Waters had 6 steals and Wassmuth had 4 steals and 3 assists.
The Patriots were 13 for 58 from the field, 22%, and 6 for 26 at the line, 23%. Highland was 10 for 40 from the field, 25%, and 4 for 16 at the line, 25%.

Boys vs. Highland
In the boys game against Highland the Huskies killed the Patriots on the offensive glass getting 14 points on putbacks and several more points when they were able to reset the offense after getting an offensive rebound.
Highland took a 0-6 lead before Bosco got on the board with a lay-up by Cody Weckman. After a Highland putback, Weckman added 2 free throws to make it 4-8.
Highland then scored 7 straight before Stallone Hoene scored. Weckman added 2 more free throws to make it 8-15 but Highland then scored 6 of the next 8 points to make it 10-21 at the quarter break. Noah Beckman scored Bosco’s lone basket in that run.
Bosco had their biggest quarter of the game in the second with 13 points but still lost ground as Highland scored 23 for a 23-44 halftime lead. Weckman scored 2 baskets in the quarter while Nathan Wassmuth scored a basket and a free throw and Beckman, Hoene and Levi Wassmuth each scored a basket.
Bosco was outscored 9-18 in the third quarter as Highland took a 32-62 lead into the fourth. Hoene had a basket and a 3-pointer for Bosco in the quarter while Levi Wassmuth and Tommy Rose each scored 2.
The running clock was invoked for the fourth quarter due to the 30-point deficit. Bosco was able to outscore Highland in the final period, 8-2. Hoene added another 3-pointer while Levi Wassmuth scored 3 and Nathan Wassmuth 2.
Hoene wound up with 12 points to lead the Patriots with Weckman also in double figures with 10. Levi Wassmuth scored 7, Nathan Wassmuth 5, Beckman 4 and Rose 2.
Highland dominated the boards 26-47. Levi Wassmuth had 7 to lead the Patriots.
Weckman had 6 steals and 2 assists while Hoene also had 2 assists.
Bosco was 15 for 55 from the field, 27%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Highland was 27 for 57 from the field, 47%, and 8 for 12 at the line, 67%.

Girls at Deary
The Lady Patriots got off to a good start at Deary as Wassmuth hit a 3-pointer to give Bosco a quick lead.
After Deary tied it on a 3-pointer, Waters drove in for a lay-up. After another Deary basket, Vivian Dahlsrud put the Patriots on top 7-5 with a shot from the elbow.
Unfortunately Deary then reeled off 11 straight points to take the lead for good. They led 7-16 at the quarter break.
Bosco scored the first 4 points of the second quarter as Raylie Warren and Waters each scored but that was it for the first half. Deary finished the half with a 0-14 scoring run to lead 11-30 at the half.
The Patriots scored just 2 points in the third quarter, a basket by Waters. Deary outscored them 2-10 to take a 13-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bosco was able to outscored Deary 12-4 in the final period.
After Deary scored to go up 13-42, Raylie Warren made a pair of free throws. Deary answered with a free throw but Warren answered with a basket.
After another Deary free throw, Bosco ended the game with an 8-0 run. Chmelik scored a basket then Warren scored again before fouling out. Dahlsrud scored a putback and Catherine Seubert scored the game’s final 2 points.
Warren led the Patriots with 8 points. Waters scored 6, Dahlsrud 4, Wassmuth 3 and Chmelik and Seubert 2 each.
Deary had a 26-28 edge on the boards. Warren had 8 to lead the Patriots.
Waters had 4 steals and 3 assists.
Bosco was 11 for 38 from the field, 29%, and 2 for 4 at the line, 50%.
Deary was 16 for 42 from the field, 38%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%.
Bosco is now 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in league play.

Boys at Deary
The Patriots got blown out of the gym in the first quarter by the Mustangs as they were blitzed 4-31.
Deary started the game 0-18 with four 3-pointers. After Bosco scored at the 3:27 mark on a basket by Levi Wassmuth, the Mustangs reeled off another 13 straight points. Hoene capped off the first quarter scoring with a pair of free throws.
Deary started the second quarter with a 4-15 run with Cody Weckman and Levi Wassmuth each scoring for the Patriots.
Deary then started sending their subs to the floor and the Patriots put together a 7-0 run. Beckman scored a free throw and a basket, Levi Wassmuth made 2 of 4 free throws and Hoene scored after making a steal.
Levi Wassmuth scored Bosco’s final 5 points of the half on a free throw and 2 baskets as Bosco trailed 20-52 at the break.
Bosco was trading scores with Deary in the third quarter until the Mustangs put together a 0-9 run to turn a 27-58 lead into a 27-67 lead.
Bosco then scored the final 5 points of the quarter on a free throw and a basket by Nathan Wassmuth and a baskets by Rose. They trailed 32-67 entering the fourth quarter and the running clock was invoked.
Bosco started the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run as Sam Weckman, who had just qualified to play after joining the team late, Rose and Beckman each scored a basket.
After 5 straight points by Deary, Bosco closed the game with a free throw each by Hoene and Levi Wassmuth.
Levi Wassmuth scored 14 to lead the Patriots. Hoene scored 8, Beckman 7, Rose 4, Nathan Wassmuth 3 and Cody and Sam Weckman 2 each.
Nathan Wassmuth had 5 rebounds to lead the Patriots although Deary dominated the boards 20-42.
Cody Weckman was a bright spot on defense with 8 steals and also had 5 assists.
Bosco was 15 for 50 from the field, 30%, and 9 for 25 at the line, 36%. Deary was 29 for 47 from the field, 62%, and 8 for 10 at the line, 80%.
Bosco is now 1-5 on the season and 0-4 in league play.
