Pirates win at Timberline
The Prairie boys basketball team picked up a much needed win as they broke a 4-game losing streak with a 61-39 win at Timberline Thursday, Dec. 21.
Prairie came out strong and jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Noah Behler, Lee Forsmann and Trenton Lorentz each scored a 2-point basket and then Riley Shears sank a 3.
Timberline finally scored at the 4:40 mark. Forsmann responded with a free throw. After a 3 by Timberline, Forsmann connected on a 3 to give Prairie a 13-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Timberline scored to open the second period then Prairie responded with 12 straight points. Briggs Rambo started the run with a basket. Behler followed with a basket off of an inbounds feed from Matt Wemhoff. Rambo then scored off a feed from Behler. Forsmann drove to the hoop for a lay-up and then stole the ball and scored again. Timberline finally scored again at the 2:24 mark but Behler closed out the half with a bank shot that made it 27-9 at the half.
Forsmann and Shears each scored to open the third quarter and put Prairie up 31-9.
Timberline then put together their best run of the game as they outscored Prairie 4-21 over the next 5 minutes of action to cut their deficit to just 5 at 35-30. The rally coincided with Forsmann going to the bench after picking up his fourth foul.
Rambo then hit a 3-pointer and Behler added a basket inside to push the lead back to 10 at the end of the third quarter, 40-30.
Rambo scored on an inbounds feed from Wemhoff to open the fourth quarter and then Wemhoff scored after making a steal to get the lead to 14 at 44-30.
Timberline scored 5 straight points but Forsmann came back into the game at the 4:30 mark and responded with a 3-pointer. After a Timberline free throw, Shears hit back to back 3’s to push the lead to 53-36 with 3:12 to play.
After 2 free throws by Timberline, Behler scored a putback. After another free throw by the Spartans, Forsmann closed out the game with a pair of 3-pointers.
Forsmann had 23 points to lead all scorers. That included four 3-poitners. Behler had his best scoring game of the season with 14 points. Shears hit three 3-pointers and scored 11. Rambo was 4 for 5 from the field for 9 points. Wemhoff and Lorentz scored 2 points each.
Prairie had a 32-24 edge on the boards with Behler and Lorentz each having 6 rebounds to lead the team.
Lorentz had 4 steals and Wemhoff and Shears each had 4 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 59 from the field, 49%, and 1 for 6 at the line, 17%. Timberline was 13 for 35 from the field, 37%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%.
Prairie goes into the Christmas break with an overall record of 2-4, 0-4 in league play.
Prairie also won a 2-quarter JV game 26-11.
Prairie led just 8-7 at the end of the first period and pulled away in the second.
Timberline took a 2-5 lead at the start with Collin Rae scoring Prairie’s lone basket. Levi Gehring then scored a pair of lay-ups to give Prairie their first lead at 6-5.
Timberline answered to retake the lead but Rae scored with 27 seconds left to put Prairie up 8-7.
Nate Forsmann scored to open the second quarter. Timberline answered to pull within 1. Prairie then put together a 16-0 run to take control of the game.
Prairie limited the Spartans to just 3 shot attempts and 4 free throw attempts in the second period as they forced 11 turnovers.
Cole Duclos started the scoring run with a lay-up. Gehring added 2 straight baskets. Kade Quintal hit a short jumper. Rae added basket. Jackson Enneking scored after making a steal. Gehring scored on a feed from Nate Forsmann. Caden Armbrust then closed out the run with a basket after a steal by Geh-ring.
That made  it 26-9 with 1:07 left to play. Timberline scored the game’s final points on a pair of free throws.
Gehring wound up as the JV’s leading  scorer with 10 points as he hit 5 of 6 shot attempts. Rae scored 6 with Enneking, Quintal, Duclos, Armbrust and Forsmann adding 2 points each.
Prairie had a 13-10 edge on the boards. Max Rehder led in rebounds with 3.
Gehring had 3 steals while Rae and Chris Schumacher had 2 each. Rehder and Forsmann each had 3 assists.
The JVs were 13 for 30 from the field, 43%, and did not attempt any free throws. Timberline was 3 for 7 from the field, 43%, and 5 for 8 at the line, 63%.
