To the Library and Beyond As we bid farewell to December and 2023, let us borrow a quote from the American Library Association to “Let Freedom Read.” Merriam Webster’s word for 2023 is “authentic.” Of no surprise to anyone, Sunday 31 December is New Year’s Eve, ending a year of inner thinking; and the next day we awake to the first day of 2024. Monday, January 1 is designated as Copyright Law Day reminding us of the legal rights to intellectual property by those who create it. Tuesday, January 2 is National Science Fiction Day, inviting us to read and write more science fiction stories. Thursday, January 4 will be doubling as National Trivia Day and World Braille Day. What better way to spice-up your trivia than by communicating it in braille? Many of us might prefer to study braille just enough to enliven our trivia game. Remember that libraries are “full of [ideas, and ideas are] perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons." As we know, weapons can be used for good or for ill. Let’s use our principled ideas to defend our rights against those who choose to use them for ill. The volunteers who manage Prairie Community Library value commitment to adaptability. We value improving our ability to learn from and appropriately respond to changes that do not interfere with our commitment to purpose. We want you to know that we are committed to enhancing adaptability for sustainable success. We invite our patrons to recommend improvements to the organization’s direction, priorities and customer service when we reopen. HAPPY NEW YEAR! |
