Lady Pirates lose at Kendrick
The Prairie Lady Pirates took the lead at halftime but then struggled in the second half as they lost 35-56 at Kendrick Tuesday, Dec. 18. Alli Geis looks to pass at Kendrick.
Prairie was turnover prone in the opening quarter which allowed Kendrick to take a 4-10 lead by the end of the period. Kylie Schumacher and Sage Elven each had a basket for the Pirates in the quarter.
Prairie scored the first 3 points of the second quarter, all free throws, to cut the lead to 3. Kylie Schumacher made the first of 2 attempts and Hailey Hanson made both of her attempts.
Kendrick then outscored Prairie 2-7 with Prairie’s only points coming on a putback by Hanson.
Prairie trailed 9-17 with 4:20 left in the half and then had their best stretch of play in the game. They outscored Kendrick 12-2 the rest of the half. Elven made a lay-up and then Lexi Schumacher made a 3 pointer and a minute later, a pair of free throws. Hanson made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left in the half to give Prairie their first lead of the game at 18-17. She had missed her second attempt but got a second chance as Kendrick had a sub come in that moved to the lane after the referee had already given Hanson the ball.
Kendrick scored with 15 seconds left to retake the lead. Prairie then had the ball out of bounds on their end with a second left to play. Hanson inbounded to Lexi Schumacher in the corner for a 3-pointer that gave Prairie a 21-19 halftime lead.
Halftime may have been the worst thing to happen to Prairie as it killed the momentum they had built over the final 4 minutes of the half.
Kendrick came out in the second half and scored 12 straight points to take a 21-31 lead. Alli Geis hit a 3-pointer with 3:38 left in the third but that turned out to be Prairie’s only points of the quarter. Kendrick then scored 5 straight to take a 24-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
A 0-9 run in the fourth quarter put the game completely out of reach as Kendrick took a 29-50 lead with 3:29 to play. Kendrick added a pair of 3’s and took their biggest lead at 32-56 with 2:05 left. A pair of free throws by Hanson and a free throw by Geis made the final margin of 21 points.
Lexi Schumacher led the Pirates in scoring with 10 points. Hanson scored 8, hitting 6 of 6 at the free throw line. Kylie Schumacher scored 7, Elven 6 and Geis 4.
Prairie had a 28-19 edge on the boards at halftime but Kendrick owned the boards in the second half and wound up with a 37-46 advantage. Geis had 12 rebounds with Elven adding 9 to lead the Pirates.
Elven had 4 steals while Lexi Schumacher had 3. Geis had 3 assists.
Prairie was 9 for 42 from the field, 21%, and just 3 for 18 in the second half, 17%. They were 12 for 16 at the line, 75%. Kendrick was 22 for 65 from the field, 34%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%.
Prairie goes into the Christmas break with an overall record of 6-6, 4-2 in league play.
Prairie won the JV game 43-24.
Kendrick scored the first 5 points of the game then Prairie outscored them 14-3 the rest of the first quarter. Nadia Cash scored 6 of those points after Avery Riener had put Prairie on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer.
Riener and Aubree Rehder each added a basket and Ellie Nuxoll made a free throw.
Kendrick scored the first 4 points of the second quarter to get within 2 but Prairie then got a lay-up and a 3-pointer from Kennedy Riener and Rehder stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to make it 21-12.
After a Kendrick basket, Halee Rowland stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to make it 23-14 at the half.
Kendrick’s Ashna Casto, who scored 25 of their 34 points, scored 6 straight to open the second half and cut Prairie’s lead to just 3 at 23-20.
Prairie got their first points of the second half with 3:20 to play in the third quarter on a basket by Cash. That kicked off an 11-0 scoring run. Nuxoll scored a putback and Rehder and Erica Schlader each added a basket to make it 31-20 after 3 quarters. Kennedy Riener then hit another 3 to open the fourth quarter and make it 34-20.
A Kendrick basket was answered by 2 free throws by Avery Riener. The two teams traded points until Kennedy Riener made her third 3 of the game with 3:19 to play to give Prairie a 43-28 lead. Kendrick then scored the game’s final 6 points to cut the final margin to 9.
Kennedy Riener wound up as Prairie’s leading scorer with 11 points. Rehder and Cash each scored 8. Avery Riener scored 7. Rowland scored 4, Nuxoll 3 and Schlader 2.
Prairie had a 45-40 edge on the boards with Schlader grabbing 10 to lead the team while Nuxoll added 8 rebounds.
Kennedy Reiner had 5 steals while Nuxoll and Rehder had 4 each. Rehder had 5 assists.
The JVs were 18 for 66 from the field, 27%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%. Kendrick was 15 for 49 from the field, 31%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%.
