Members of the Cottonwood Lions Club replaced the letters spelling IDAHO in the Centennial Garden last Thursday, August 1. The concrete letters were getting broken up after 34 years. Joe Nuxoll donated the steel for the new letters and Dylan Uhlenkott cut and welded the new letters for his senior project. Click on the photo for a larger view.

Jim Remacle of the Cottonwood Lions Club uses a tape measure to help line up the new letters while Jerry Richardson looks to move them if need be. In the future the Lions are looking at replacing the 1890 and 1990 and putting new white rock in the Idaho outline. Others shown are Jack Uptmor, Ed Wemhoff Lindy Hinkelman, Dave Richards and Ben Seubert. Click on the photo for a larger view.

One of the Living History characters at the Historical Museum’s open house on Saturday was Leah Uptmor as Charlotte Mae Pierstorff, the young lady who was “mailed” from Grangeville to Lewiston to visit her grandmother. She was designated as a “baby chick” and mailed on the train. Going as mail was much less expensive than purchasing a train fare. Not too long after that the US Postal Service outlawed sending people as mail. More photos from the event in article upper left. Click on the photo for a larger view.

The former breezeway between the K-1 building and the Elementary School cafeteria has now been completely enclosed. This was done for safety reasons as it was a soft spot in securing the building as well as problematic during winter storms. Click on the photo for a larger view.
