Lady Patriots qualify for State The St. John Bosco Lady Patriots qualified for their first state volleyball tournament in school history. They did by first beating Nezperce 25-23, 25-20, 25-17 on Tuesday, Oct. 22. That put them in the District championship match against Genesee where they lost 18-25, 12-25, 17-25 on Thursday, Oct. 24. Both of those matches were at the LCSC Activity Center. By finishing second at District they then were able to travel to Coeur d’Alene to play District 1 champion Coeur du Christ on Saturday, Oct. 26, and won 22-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-12 to qualify for State. The Lady Patriots will now travel to Canyon Ridge High School in Twin Falls where they will be the #8 seed and play #1 seeded Rockland at 5 p.m. MDT on Thursday, Oct. 31. Vs. Nezperce The Patriots had split
with Nezperce during the season, losing in 5 at Nezperce and then
sweeping the Nighthawks at Cottonwood. In the rubber match that was
also an elimination game at District in the Activity Center, it did not
start well as the Patriots fell behind 1-4.They came back to tie it at 6 and again at 7. After a sideout kill by Rachel Sonnen tied it at 8, Bosco took their first lead as Noelle Chmelik and Savannah Perrin combined on a block. Sarah Waters then served and ace and Sonnen scored on a tip for an 11-8 lead. Bosco led by as many as 5 at 19-154 after a kill by Presley Schoo. Nezperce then came back with 6 straight points to retake the lead. Two kills by Waters put Bosco on top but Nezperce tied it at 21. A kill by Sonnen and an block by Perrin made it 23-21. However Nezperce tied it again at 23. Sonnen scored a sideout kill to get to set point then a double hit violation against Nezperce gave Bosco the first set. In the second set Bosco took their first lead at 4-3 on a kill to the back line by Waters. Nezperce took back the lead and except for a 10-9 lead by Bosco, they held it or the score was tied until a tip by Julia Wassmuth sent Sonnen to the service line. Sonnen served 3 straight aces and then a kill each by Schoo, Wassmuth and Perrin made it 19-14. Nezperce was able to get back within 2 at 19-17 but couldn’t get any closer as Bosco closed out the set. Bosco never trailed in the third set after Chmelik served them to a 4-0 lead with 2 aces plus a kill each by Perrin and Sonnen. Nezperce got it down to 2 at 10-8 and again at 11-9. A sideout tip by Perrin, 2 aces by Sonnen and a kill by Schoo pushed the lead back to 6 at 15-9. Bosco then steadily pulled way until Chmelik scored the match winning point on a jump serve ace. For the match Perrin had 17 kills, including 3 blocks, plus 1 assist and 1 ace. Waters had 15 kills, 2 assists and 1 ace. Sonnen had 13 kills and 6 aces. Chmelik had 6 kills, including a block, plus 27 assists and 3 aces. Wasmuth had 4 kills and 17 assists. Schoo had 4 kills and 2 aces. District Championship vs. Genesee The District Championship
game against Genesee went similar to the match earlier in the week
although Bosco was able to make the sets a little closer this time.Bosco took a 3-0 lead in the first set on 2 aces by Chmelik and a kill by Sonnen. Genesee answered with 3 straight but tip by Wassmuth and an ace by Sonnen made it 5-4. Genesee then scored 3 straight to take their first lead. Bosco was able to retake the lead on a kill each by Chmelik and Schoo at 10-8. Genesee then scored 7 straight points and never gave back the lead. Bosco was able to get within 2 at 15-17 after an ace by Sonnen and 17-19 after an ace by Perrin but Genesee responded each time. Bosco never led in the second set and the last time they were tied was at 6-6. Genesee then scored 5 straight points and 11 of the next 13 to take control at 8-17. They cruised to a 13-point win. Bosco never led in the final set after falling behind 0-2 and 1-4. They were able to tie it at 6 after a kill each by Chmelik and Schoo and an ace by Waters. Genesee took back the lead and never gave it back. Bosco was able to keep it close as they got back within 1 at 14-15 and within 3 at 16-19. Genesee then scored 6 of the last 7 points to win by 8. For the match Chmelik had 7 kills, 14 assists and 3 aces. Waters had 7 kills and 1 ace. Perrin had 6 kills, including a block and 1 ace. Schoo had 5 kills, including a block. Sonnen had 3 kills, 2 assists and 2 aces. Wassmuth had 2 kills, 10 assists and 1 ace. Miah Mager had 1 assist. Vs. Coeur du Christ Bosco had 1 more chance at
advancing to state as they traveled to Coeur d’Alene High School on
Saturday to play Coeur du Christ, the District 1 champion, for a state
berth. They are a Catholic school in Coeur d’Alene.The Patriots may have been nervous the first set as this was only the second time in their school history their volleyball team had reached a play-in match. The previous time was in 2017 when they took second at District and lost to Council at Grangeville in a play-in match. The Saints jumped out to a 1-5 lead and held the lead until Perrin scored a block to make it 11-10. That turned out to be Bosco’s only lead of the set as the Saints answered with 3 straight points. Bosco tied it at 13 on an ace by Perrin but the Saints then took the lead for good. Despite losing the first set the Patriots knew they could compete with the District 1 champions. The second set was a battle back and forth as there were 6 ties and 4 lead changes early on. Bosco took the lead for good though on a kill each by Chmelik and Waters that made it 8-6. After a sideout, Waters and Perrin each scored a kill and Waters served an ace to make it 11-7. The Saints were able to rally within 1 at 17-16 after 2 aces but Waters then scored a tip for a sideout. Schoo then served 5 straight points to put the Patriots in control. She had 1 aces while Waters scored 4 kills as Bosco took a 23-16 lead. A pair of sideouts brought the score to 24-17 and Perrin and Chmelik combined on a block to even the match at a set apiece. In the third set Sonnen had a big service run that put the Patriots on top. At 1-1 Wassmuth scored on a tip and Sonnen went back to serve. She had 3 aces while Perrin scored 3 kills plus a block as Bosco took a 9-1 lead. After a sideout, Perrin scored a kill and then went back to serve. Wassmuth, Waters and Catherine Seubert each scored a kill for a 13-2 lead. After 8 straight sideouts, Chmelik took her turn at the service line and turned a 17-6 lead into a 22-6 lead. Shears had 4 aces and Wassmuth added a tip. The Saints got back within 12 before 2 straight kills by Waters ended the set and put Bosco up 2 sets to 1. In the fourth set, Bosco trailed 3-6 when the Saints sent a serve long. Wassmuth then stepped to the service line and served 7 straight points. She had 2 aces while Watrs scored 4 kills and Chmelik added another for an 11-6 lead. After a sideout, Chmelik scored a kill to sent Schoo to the service line at 12-7. She served 6 straight for an 11-point lead. Shea had 2 aces while Waters added 4 more kills. After 4 straight sideouts, Chmelik served an ace to make it 21-9. After 4 more sideouts, Perrin served an ace to make it 24-11. The Saints fought off one match point but Waters scored on a tip to send the Patriots to the State Tournament. For the match Waters had 29 kills, 2 assists and an ace. Perrin had 13 kills, including 3 blocks, plus 2 assists and 3 aces. Chmelik had 8 kills, including a block, plus 25 assists and 7 aces. Wassmuth had 8 kills, 19 assists and 2 aces. Schoo had 3 kills, 1 assist and 2 aces. Sonnen had 2 kills, 1 assist and 6 aces. Seubert had 2 kills. St. John Bosco takes a record of 11-10 into the state tournament. Julia Wassmuth makes a pass in the play-in game. Miah Mager makes a pass in the play-in game.
