To the Library and Beyond For children of all ages – mark your calendars - on Tuesday 17 December, Santa will be visiting Story Hour. Recent additions to the New Arrivals shelves include two books recommended by Mary L.: The Boyfriend, a book-club thriller by New York Times best-selling author Freida McFadden and Save Me, a large-print edition by Lisa Scottoline. Joan has reviewed a book about the passage of Americans across the West. Women’s Diaries Of The Westward Journey, presents an account from women’s point of view of the many aspects of trail travel from 1840 to 1867. The author, Lillian Schlissel, has published this collection of excerpts from many women’s diaries as they traveled the Oregon and California trails. The stories in this book feature encounters with Native Americans, the physical hardships required by their quests, severe weather, accidents, sickness (primarily cholera) and death, and the numerous graves observed along the way. With many historical photos included, this book is a fascinating historical collection of writings about western trail travel during the mid-1800s. During December we may be thinking about long-range planning, “[focusing] on environmental and economic sustainability, urban infrastructure, social equity, and municipal government.” December is Write To A Friend Month. Sunday 7 December is Letter Writing Day, and in 1941 December 7 was a Sunday as well, historically remembered as Pearl Harbor Day. In 2022, Prairie Community Library loaned 2,073 items; in 2023, 1,484 of items loaned were for children. We look forward to welcoming more dedicated volunteers who will be able to spend an hour or more each week learning more about the Library and sharing your many talents. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to promote projects and partner with all that complement our purpose to serve the current and evolving literary needs of area residents. Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Volunteering helps us feel happier and increases our social skills.” Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service. Thank you all! | COTTONWOOD
