20 turn out for Prairie boys basketball There are 20 players turned out this year for Prairie boys basketball led by 5 seniors. Those seniors are returning starters Matt Wemhoff and Briggs Rambo, returning 6th man Logan Weber and Collin Ray and Cole Duclos. There are 10 juniors on the team. Riley Shears and Phil Schwartz are returning starters with Levi Gehring, Nate Forsmann, Chase VonBargen, Jackson Enneking, Max Rehder and Ben Secrest on the varsity. Patrick Schlader, a transfer from Coeur d’Alene is also a junior but is likely to miss the season after knee surgery. Caden Armbrust will be on the JV full time while VonBargen, Enneking, Rehder and Secrest will be swing players. Kade Quintal is the only sophomore on the team and is full time JV. There are 5 freshmen, all on the JV. They are Matthew Jones, Stetson Hankins, Nathan Weber, Phineas Fitch and exchange student Kento Morita. Coach Tim Scheffler, back for his third season as head coach with Teel Bruner back as assistant coach. Scheffler says he is excited for the season. He says he feels they have a lot of depth and will be able to rotate players and keep everybody fresh for the fourth quarter. He has ballhandlers back in Schwartz and Wemhoff and good size with Forsmann at 6’5” and Rambo and Shears both at 6’4”. He said it’s too bad that Schlader is coming off of surgery because he looks like he could really help the team. He feels Lapwai will be tough again despite losing Yearout and Wynott to graduation as they seem to just reload each year. Kendrick will be a strong team coming off of back to back state championship game appearances at the 1A-D2 level although they lost one of their best players to a leg injury. Potlatch, Logos and Kamiah are always contenders. Troy will likely do better in basketball than they did in football. The White Pine League will get 1½ teams to state as the second place team at District will have to play in against a team from District 1. This is due to C.V. successfully petitioning to drop down to 1A for boys basketball. The JV team sees their first action at Grangeville on Wednesday, Dec. 4, while the varsity’s first game is at home against Grangeville on Friday in the Idaho County Shootout. Briggs Rambo, right, goes for a lay-up after taking the ball from Ben Secrest, left, during a 3-man weave drill. Collin Ray puts up a shot as coach Tim Scheffler looks on. Levi Gehring goes up for a lay-up. Nate Forsmann puts up a shot during practice Monday. Also shown is Logan Weber. Briggs Rambo gets extension on a jump shot.
