To the Library and Beyond Please note, Santa will be visiting the Library for Story Hour (10 – 11 AM) on Tuesday 17 December; he will bring gifts for the children. Joan has reviewed the 1969 book Great Adventures Of The Old West, a collection of articles published in American Heritage magazine during the 1950s and 1960s. Topics include exploration of different western areas such as Pikes Peak area in Colorado, Hells Canyon in Idaho, Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada. Other articles cover the Alamo, the abduction of Cynthia Ann Parker, several gold rushes, the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, overland stage coach routes, Geronimo’s travails, and more. Library volunteers look forward to welcoming additional positive and responsible volunteers to join our weekly efforts. December is Learn A Foreign Language Month. Library volunteers may be thinking about long-range planning for sustainable communities that “tend to focus on environmental and economic sustainability, urban infrastructure, social equity, and municipal government.” “Volunteering helps us gain new and valuable skills and provides us with a sense of community.” Monday 9 begins Computer Science Education Week; Tuesday 10 is Dewey Decimal System Day in memory of the birth of Melvil Dewey in 1851. In 2018 Prairie Community Library served 2,023 people; in 2022, 665 children and parents attended Story Hour.
