JV girls win at Highland
The Prairie JV girls basketball team led by
as many as 16 points but had to hold on to win 49-44 over Highland at
Craigmont Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Prairie JV team was playing Highland’s varsity. Prairie jumped out toa 5-0 lead on a 3 by Mia Anderson and a basket by Beka Schumacher. Highland came right back to tie it at 5-5. Prairie took a 9-5 lead by the end of the first quarter on a basket by Erica Schlader and 2 free throws by Anderson. In the second quarter, Prairie led just 11-9 when they put together a 12-0 run to take control. Anderson and Schlader each sank a 3-pointer while Kenly Forsmann scored to make it 19-9. Anderson and Schlader then each stole the ball and scored a lay-up to make it 23-9. Highland finally broke the run with a basket on an inbounds play. A basket by Zoey Behler closed out the first half with Prairie up 25-11. Highland scored to open the second half. Reagan Brannan answered with a pair of free throws. After another Highland basket, Prairie took their biggest lead of the game on a basket by Schumacher and 2 free throws by Anderson. That made it 31-15 with 3:46 left in the third quarter. Highland then came back with their first 3-pointer of the game and wound up scoring 8 straight to cut the lead in half. A putback by Brannan made it 33-23 but Highland then scored a free throw and a basket to make it 33-26 after 3 quarters. Anderson converted a pair of 3-point plays early in the fourth quarter to help Prairie get the lead back to double digits at 39-28 with 6:15 to play. Unfortunately Anderson fouled out not long after that. With Anderson being Prairie’s best ballhandler, Highland stepped up their full-court press and forced several turnovers that led to baskets. Highland scored a pair of baskets to pull within 7 at 39-32. Schumacher made a basket and Faith Cash added a free throw to put the lead back to 10. A Highland basket was answered by a free throw by Alli Rambo. Another Highland basket was answered by a steal and drive for a basket by Cash that made it 45-36 with 1:36 to play. Highland then scored 2 free throws followed by a 3-pointer to cut the lead to just 4 at 45-41 with 50 seconds left. Forsmann scored from the baseline with 35 seconds left to put the lead at 6. Highland scored another 3 pointer to make it a 1-possession game at 47-44 with 23 seconds left. Prairie worked the clock until Schlader got fouled with 11 seconds left. She converted 2 big free throws to get the lead to 5 points. Highland was unable to score again and Prairie wound up winning by 5. Anderson scored 19 points to lead the Pirates. She also had 8 steals. Schlader scored 9 points and had 2 assists and 3 steals. Schumacher scored 6 points, Brannan 5, Forsmann 4, Cash 3, Behler 2 and Rambo 1. Highland dominated the boards 33-47 led by Kylee Beck who had 17 rebounds. Schumacher and Brannan each had 9 to lead Prairie. Highland was led in scoring by Sheradan Stamper with 16 points while Beck had a double-double with 14 points. Prairie was 16 for 56 from the field, 29%, and 14 for 22 at the line, 64%. Highland was 17 for 50 from the field, 34%, and 10 for 19 at the line, 53%. The JVs are now 2-1 on the season.
