Lady Pirates improve to 4-0
The
Prairie Lady Pirates picked up a pair of home wins this past week as
they defeated Kendrick 68-16 on Thursday, Dec. 5, in a league matchup,
and then defeated Grangeville 68-54 on Friday, Dec. 6 during the Idaho
County Shootout. Vs. Kendrick Against the Lady Tigers,
Prairie used their press to take a 30-6 lead by the end of the first
quarter. They took the press off in the second and upped their lead to
44-9 by halftime.They outscored the Tigers 24-7 in the third quarter and neither team scored in the running clock fourth quarter. Lexi Schumacher led Prairie in scoring with 21 points while Kylie Schumacher added 18 and Sage Elven 14. Hailey Hanson scored 6 with Aubree Rehder scoring 4, Sydney Shears and Kadence Kalmbach 2 each and Erica Schlader 1. game against Grangeville was Prairie’s first competitive game of the
season as the other 3 had all been blowouts.Grangeville jumped out to a 0-5 lead but Prairie responded with an 18-2 run to take the lead for good. Kylie Schumacher started the scoring with a free throw and then added a putback. Lexi Schumacher banked in a 3-pointer to give Prairie their first lead. Sage Elven added a short jump shot and Lexi Schumacher a pair of free throws for a 10-5 lead. Grangeville scored again then Prairie reeled off another 8 straight points, split evenly between Kylie and Lexi Schumacher. Kylie scored a lay-up and Lexi scored 2 free throws. Kylie scored another lay-up and Lexi drove for a lay-up to make it 18-7. Grangeville managed to outscore Prairie 4-7 the rest of the first quarter with all their points coming at the free throw line. Prairie meanwhile had 2 free throws from Elven and then a steal by Elven set up a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher. Prairie led 22-14 at the end of the first quarter. Kylie Schumacher scored to open the second quarter then Grangeville rallied back within 3 points as they scored 7 straight. Prairie broke a nearly 5 minute scoring drought when Nadia Cash scored a basket. Lexi Schumacher followed with a free throw and Erica Schlader hit a bank shot to push the lead back to 8 at 29-21. After a Grangeville putback, Cash closed out the first half scoring with a free throw that made it 30-23 at the break. Elven and Kylie Schumacher carried the scoring load in the third quarter as they were able to hold Grangeville at bay. Scoring went back and forth in the third quarter. Elven scored twice and Grangeville answered each time. Elven and Kylie Schumacher then scored back to back baskets to make it 38-27. Grangeville scored and Elven answered with a turn-around shot. After another Grangeville basket, Hanson hit 3 of 4 free throws for a 43-31 lead. Grangeville outscored Prairie 4-10 over the next 2 minutes to cut their deficit to 47-41. Kylie Schumacher then scored a lay-up to close the third quarter and give Prairie a 49-41 lead. Grangeville opened the fourth quarter with a basket and Kylie Schumacher responded with a lay-up. A steal by Lexi Schumacher then led to a putback by Kaylie to make it 53-43. Grangeville then hit a 3 and a lay-up to pull within 5 at 53-48, the closest they would get in the second half. Prairie then answered with a 9-0 run to take their biggest lead to that point at 62-48. Shears started the run but leading a break for a lay-up. A lay-up by Kylie Schumacher and a reverse lay-up by Elven made it 59-48. 2 free throws by Shears made it 61-48. A free throw by Cash topped off the run with Prairie up by 14 with just 1:36 to play. Grangeville broke their 3 minute scoring drought with a free throw. Prairie answered with a free throw by Cash and 2 free throws by Kylie Schumacher to make it 65-49 with 49 seconds to play. A Grangeville basket was answered by a basket by Cash. A free throw by Grangeville was answered with a free throw by Elven to make it 68-52 with 13 seconds left. Grangeville scored the final points of the game just ahead of the final buzzer. Kylie Schumacher and Elven each had a big double-double in the game. Kylie Schumacher had 21 points and 15 rebounds while Elven had 19 points and a game high 18 rebounds. For Kylie Schumacher it was a bit of a coming out party as she had struggled the past two years against Grangeville. Lexi Schumacher scored 12 points with Cash adding 7, Shears 4, Hanson 3 and Schlader 2. Prairie had a big 46-35 advantage on the boards. Elven had 5 steals while Kylie Schumacher had 4 steals and Cash had 3. Shears had 5 assists while Lexi Schumacher had 4. Prairie was 24 for 48 from the field, 50%, and 19 for 30 at the line, 63%.
