Pirates win 1 of 3 games
The Prairie Pirates won just 1 of 3 games to finish the 2024 portion of their schedule. On Tuesday, Dec. 17, they traveled to Grangeville and avenged an earlier loss 62-31. On Thursday, Dec. 19 they hosted Kamiah and lost 49-64. Finally on Saturday, Dec. 21, they traveled to Moscow where they lost to Logos 61-66.
At Grangeville
The game as Grangeville was totally unlike the game at the Idaho County Shootout as Prairie dominated from the start.
At the Shootout, neither team could score a basket for most of the first quarter. This time Grangeville scored first but Prairie then reeled off 13 straight points. BriggsRiley Shears makes a pass against Grangeville. Rambo tied the game on a short jumper on an inbounds feed from Phil Schwartz. Riley Shears then gave Prairie their first lead with a 3-point play at the 4:57 mark. Rambo scored on another inbounds play. Matt Wemhoff scored a lay-up. Nate Forsmann scored on a tip-in and Rambo scored a putback to make it 13-2.
Grangeville broke the run with a pair of free throws but Forsmann answered with a lay-up. After a Grangeville basket, Shears scored 5 straight on a lay-up and a 3-pointer. After 2 Grangeville free throws, Rambo closed out the first quarter scoring with a lay-up to make it 22-8.
Grangeville scored to open the second quarter then Prairie went on a 16-3 run. Wemhoff scored a lay-up, Forsmann scored a putback, Shears hit another 3 and Rambo scored a lay-up to make it 31-10. After a Grangeville free throw, Wemhoff scored a lay-up. After a Grangeville basket, Levi Gehring converted a 3-point play and Forsmann scored another putback to make it 38-13.
Grangeville scored a free throw and a basket before Forsmann closed out the first half scoring with another putback to make it 40-16 at the break.
A lot of Prairie’s offense came as a result of their defense as the Pirates forced 19 turnovers in the first half.
Shears scored to open the second half. Grangeville answered then Prairie scored 6 straight points to take a 48-18 lead. Rambo, Shears and Gehring each scored a basket in that run.
Grangeville scored but Forsmann answered with a basket. After another Grangeville basket, Prairie closed out the quarter with 6 straight points. Schwartz made a pair of free throws when Grangeville was called for a technical foul. Wemhoff and Rambo each scored a basket as Prairie took a 56-22 lead into the fourth quarter. That made it so the entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
Grangeville opened the fourth quarter with a basket then Ben Secrest made 2 free throws and Sheas scored a lay-up.
Grangeville scored a pair of baskets then Cole Duclos scored a lay-up for Prairie’s final points. Grangeville made a late 3 for the final points of the game.
Shears led the scoring with 17 points while Rambo scored 14 and Forsmann 12. Gehring added 7 points, Wemhoff 6 and Schwartz, Secrest  and Duclos scored 2 each.
Grangeville had a 30-31 edge on the boards. Forsmann led the Pirates with 9 rebounds.
Schwartz had 6 steals while Wemhoff and Shears had 4 each. Schwartz also led in assists with 5 while Gehring had 4.
Prairie was 27 for 60 from the field, 45%, and 6 for 8 at the line, 75%. Grangeville was 12 for 38 from the field, 32%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.
Prairie also won the JV game 59-29.
Secrest scored the first 2 points of the game then Grangeville took what turned out to be their only lead with a pair of baskets. Max Rehder put Prairie back on top with a 3 and Jackson Enneking converted a 3-point play for an 8-4 lead.
After a Grangeville basket, Chase VonBargen made a 3. After another Grangeville basket, Kade Quintal made a 3 for a 14-8 lead. Quintal added 2 more baskets as Prairie took an 18-12 lead into the second quarter.
Grangeville scored first in the second quarter then Prairie scored 16 straight points. VonBargen scored half of those on 4 baskets. Secrest and Rehder each added a pair of baskets as Prairie took a 34-14 lead.
Grangeville broke a more than 6 minute scoring drought then Enneking finished off the half with a putback for a 36-16 lead.
Prairie outscored Grangeville 12-8 in the third quarter with Quintal scoring 4 baskets for 8 points. Rehder and Secrest each added a basket as Prairie took a 48-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Prairie started the final period with an 8-0 run to invoke the running clock mercy rule with 6:01 left to play.
Quintal opened the fourth with a lay-up then Rehder scored a pair of baskets for a 54-24 lead. Secrest then stole the ball and drove for a lay-up to make it 56-24.
Grangeville broke their scoring drought then Caden Armbrust scored a lay-up and Enneking added a free throw to make it 59-25. Grangeville then scored the game’s final 4 points.
Quintal led 4 players in double figures with 17 points. Rehder scored 13, VonBargen scored 11 and Secrest scored 10. Enneking added 6 points and Armbrust 2.
Grangeville had the rebounding edge 31-34. Rehder had 7 to lead the Pirates.
Enneking had 6 steals and 5 assists while Quintal had 5 steals and 5 assists.
Prairie was 27 for 66 from the field, 41%, and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%. Grangeville was 14 for 35 from the field, 40%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%.
There was also a 2 quarter C game which Prairie won in the final seconds 19-17.
Phineas Fitch scored 4 in the first quarter and Armbrust added 2 as Grangeville led 6-7.
Grangeville opened the second quarter with a 1-7 run with Stetson Hankins scoring Prairie’s only point. Hankins scored a basket to make it 9-14 then Grangeville scored to make it 9-16 with 5:10 to play.
Prairie then scored 8 straight points to take their first lead of the game. Kento Morita scored on a drive then Fitch added a pair of baskets. Nathan Weber scored a putback for Prairie’s first lead with 1:58 to play.
Grangeville tied it with a free throw with 1:36 left.
With 5 seconds to play Fitch scored the winning basket.
Fitch had 10 points to lead the C team while Hankins scored 3. Armbrust, Morita and Weber each scored 2.
Prairie had a 22-15 rebounding edge led by Fitch with 6 and Weber with 5.
Hankins and Weber each had 2 steals while Hankins had 2 assists.
Prairie was 9 for 26 from the field, 35%, and 1 for 4 at the line, 25%. Grangeville was 7 for 26 from the field, 27%, and 3 for 7 at the line, 42%.

Vs. Kamiah
In Prairie’s only home game of the week, the Pirates stayed close through the first half but an ice-cold third quarter did them in.
It was tied at 19-19 after the first quarter and Prairie was still in it a halftime as they were down 31-36.
Kamiah outscored Prairie 1-19 in the third quarter to take a 32-55 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Pirates outscored Kamiah 17-9 in the fourth but had dug themselves too deep of a hole in the third quarter.
Rambo led the Pirates with 13 points while Schwart scored 12. Forsmann scored 7, Gehring 6 and Wemhoff 2.
Prairie also lost the JV game 42-45.

At Logos
The game at Logos had a pair of scoring streaks in it. The first was by Prairie and the second by Logos.
Briggs Rambo drives past a Logos defender.The game went back and forth early on as Logos jumped to a 0-5 lead then Prairie came back with Shears converting a 3-point play and Rambo scoring a lay-up to tie it at 5. Two Logos baskets were answered by a lay-up each by Schwartz and Shears.
After a Logos basket, Rambo scored a pair of baskets to give Prairie their first lead at 13-11. Logos then scored to tie it at 13 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie dominated the first 5:30 of the second quarter, outscoring Logos 21-4. A basket by Forsmann, 2 baskets by Rambo and a 3 by Schwartz gave Prairie a 22-13 lead. After 2 baskets by Logos, Prairie got 12 straight points to take a 34-17 lead. Rambo converted a 3-point play and then scored on a putback. Gehring scored a lay-up off of a full-court inbound feed after a Logos turnover. Rambo scored again and then stole the ball which led to a 3-point play by Gehring for a 17-point lead.
Logos then scored 10 straight points before Schwartz made his second 3 of the quarter. Logos then scored 3 more points to pull within 7 at 37-30 at the half.
The Knights came out and scored the first 6 points of the second half to cut what once was a 17 point lead down to 1 at 37-36.
Rambo scored a putback but Logos then scored 8 straight points to take a 39-44 lead. A free throw by Schwartz and a basket each by Wemhoff and Shears got the Pirates back within 3 at 43-46. Logos scored but Prairie answered with 2 free throws by Wemhoff. A basket by Logos made it 45-50 at the end of 3 quarters.
A basket each by Rambo and Schwartz got Prairie within 1 at 49-50. Logos scored but Wemhoff answered to again cut the lead to 1 at 51-52.
Logos then put together a 1-10 run to push their lead to double digits at 52-62.
Prairie then put their own streak together as Schwartz and Forsmann each scored a putback to cut the lead to 6. A 3 by Schwartz and a lay-up by Wemhoff off a long outlet pass by Forsmann, again cut the lead to just 1 at 61-62 with 40 seconds left.
Logos scored with 21 seconds left for a 3-point lead. Prairie then tried to set up a game-tying 3 but Logos stole the ball and scored to make the final margin 5 points.
Rambo led the Pirates with 22 points and also had 11 rebounds. Schwartz added 16 points. Shears and Gehring scored 7 each with Wemhoff scoring 5 and Forsmann 4.
Logos had a 32-39 rebounding edge. Forsmann tied Rambo for the team lead with 11 rebounds.
Forsmann had 5 steals while Wemhoff had 4. Shears had 5 assists while Schwartz had 4.
Prairie was 25 for 62 from the field, 40%, and 8 for 16 at the line, 50%. Logos was 28 for 58 from the field, 48%, and 5 for 7 at the line, 71%.
Prairie is now 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
Logos also won the JV game 44-52.
Prairie had a strong start as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a 3 by Rehder and 2 free throws by Secrest. After a Logos basket, VonBargen scored 2 baskets and a free throw to make it 10-2. After a Logos free throw, Quintal made 2 free throws for a 12-3 lead.
Logos then scored 5 straight to end the quarter and make it 12-8.
Logos scored to open the second quarter and cut the lead to just 2 at 12-10. VonBargen made 3 of 4 free throws to push the lead back to 5 at 15-10.
Logos then scored 12 straight points to take the lead. Enneking scored to break the scoring drought but Logos answered with a 3. Rehder sank a 3 of his own to make it 20-25 at the half.
Logos scored the first 5 points of the second half to push their lead to 10 and Prairie got no closer than 5 the rest of the way.
They got within 5 at the end of the third quarter as a basket by Rehder and 2 free throws by Secrest in the final 20 seconds made it 31-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
A 3 by Logos was answere with a 3 by Quintal. Logos then went on a 2-11 run to take a 36-50 lead. 9 of those 11 points came on consecutive 3’s by their freshman point guard.
Prairie then went on their own run to get back within 7 as Quintal scored a basket and 4 free throws and Enneking added a free throw in a 7-0 run. There were just 59 seconds left at the end of the run with the score at 43-50. Logos then scored a pair of free throws and Quintal added another free throw to close out the game.
Quintal scored 12 to lead the JV’s. Rehder and VonBargen each scored 8. Secrest scored 6, Enneking 5, Morita 3 and Matthew Jones 2.
Logos dominated the boards 35-57. Enneking and Rehder each had 8 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Vonbargen had 3 steals and Quintal and Rehder each had 3 assists.
The JVs were 11 for 49 from the field, 22%, and 18 for 33 at the line, 55%. Logos was 19 for 60 from the field, 32%, and 9 for 23 at the line, 39%.
